Freshman (2011-12)
Shelby Martinek made an immediate impact on the Nebraska lineup as a true freshman, before being knocked out of the lineup for the season by an injury.

An experienced junior golfer at the national level, Martinek brought a decorated resume' to Nebraska. The 2008 Arizona Class 5A-II state champion, Martinek was ranked as one of the top 175 players in the GolfWeek/Sagarin girls rankings as a senior at Marcos de Niza High School in Tempe.

Martinek continued to gain experience while making the adjustment to collegiate golf, and became a valuable contributor to the Husker lineup. She produced arguably her best collegiate performance with a career-best 221 (76-72-73) at the Westbrook Spring Invitational in her home state of Arizona, Feb. 26-27. Martinek produced the second top-25 finish of her career by tying for 21st on the Vistas Course at the Westbrook Golf Club in Peoria, Ariz.

Martinek produced the best finish of her young career by tying for 18th (80-71-79-230) at the Hoosier Fall Invitational in Carmel, Ind., Oct. 17-18. In just her second appearance in NU's top five, Martinek produced her first round better than par with a second-round 71.

She improved that score with a career-best 70 in the second round at the Alamo Invitational on Oct. 31. She was in position for a top 25 finish in San Antonio after an opening-round 74, but settled for a tie for 57th at 233 after struggling to an 89 in the final round.

Martinek opened the spring by tying for 69th (81-81-80-242) at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic, Feb. 12-14, before her career performance at the Westbrook Spring Invite. She missed the BYU at Entrada Classic and the Mountain View Collegiate because of an injury, then underwent surgery in late March to prematurely end her freshman season.

Martinek opened her freshman campaign by tying for 35th (78-82-82-242) at Nebraska's season-opening Chip-N Club Invitational, Sept. 12-13, at the Country Club of Lincoln. She played outside the Husker top five at the Chip-N Club, but earned her first lineup spot at NU's second fall tournament, the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational in Sammamish, Wash., Oct. 3-5. She tied for 58th with a three-round score of 249. She also traveled with the Huskers as an individual to the Lady Northern Invitational in French Lick, Ind., Oct. 10-11, where she tied for 59th with a three-round total of 243 that included a 75 in the second round.

"A lot of schools were recruiting Shelby, and we feel great about her choice to become a Husker," Nebraska Coach Robin Krapfl said. "She has an outstanding short game, works hard and has really developed into a player who can manage her game and shoot low numbers."

High School/Amateur
Martinek captured a state title with a four-over-par 148 while leading Marcos de Niza High School to the Arizona Class 5A-II state team championship as a sophomore in 2008. She added runner-up honors in both 2007 and 2009, while helping the Padres to a team runner-up finish as a freshman in 2007. She withdrew from the 2010 tournament because of a back injury.

One of the top 175 players in the GolfWeek/Sagarin girls rankings, Martinek advanced to the First Flight semifinals of the 2010 Women's Western Golf Association Junior National Match Play Championships in Grainger, Ind. Competing on GolfWeek's Junior Golf Tour, the left-handed Martinek won three tournaments (The Open at Arrowhead, the Showdown at Painted Dunes, and the Ocotillo Open) from February to May of 2010. She fired back-to-back rounds of 74 at the Ocotillo Open to finish with a winning 36-hole score of 148. In 2007, Martinek was named an All-American on the Future Collegians World Tour.

Martinek competed as a 9-10 year-old at the Calloway Junior World Championships in 2002 and 2003.
