One of the top prep golfers during the past three years in the state of Wisconsin, Erin Sharpee came to Nebraska after an outstanding high school and amateur career. Although Nebraska returned 90 percent of its 2008-09 roster, Sharpee earned immediate time in the Husker lineup early in the season.
Her 77.00 stroke average over 24 rounds on the season ranked as the second-best average by a freshman in school history. Her rookie campaign included a career-best 68 in the third round of the Heather Farr Memorial, which is the best round by Husker freshman in history.
She produced an impressive collegiate debut, tying for 15th while playing as an individual outside of Nebraska's lineup at the Chip-N Club Invitational, Sept. 14-15. After an opening-round 80, Sharpee vaulted up the leaderboard over the final 36 holes with back-to-back rounds of even-par 72 on the 6,214-yard layout at Wilderness Ridge in Lincoln to finish at 224 for the tournament. Her performance earned her a spot in Nebraska's lineup for the Huskers' second tournament, the Ron Moore Intercollegiate in Highlands Ranch, Colo., Sept. 21-23.
Sharpee continued to improve throughout the tournament, overcoming heavy rain and sleet throughout the first round to post a three-round score of 236 (81-80-75) to finish in a tie for 34th in the 73-player field. Her final-round 75 was NU's second-best score of the final round, and she helped the Huskers to a sixth-place finish in the 13-team field.
In Nebraska's third tournament of the season, Sharpee helped push the Huskers to a runner-up finish in a 20-team field at the Heather Farr Memorial in Erie, Colo., by unleashing one of the best rounds in school history on the final day of competition. Sharpee's four-under-par 68 in the final round was just one stroke shy of the school record and helped her finish in a tie for 11th at 225 (77-80-68).
Sharpee added a 77 to tie for 28th in the lone round of the Alamo Invitational on Oct. 27, before closing the fall with a career-best three-round total of 219 on a par 70 layout at The Challenge at Onion Creek in Austin, Texas, Nov. 2-3. Sharpee fired rounds of 72, 73 and 74 to finish in a tie for 42nd in a 21-team field at Onion Creek.
She ended the fall with Nebraska's third-best stroke average (75.46), while joining Natalie Gleadall, JC Stevenson and Maddie Sheils as the only Huskers to play in all 13 rounds of the fall campaign.
Sharpee did not compete at the UCF Challenge to open the spring campaign, then tied for 84th (24) at the UNLV Spring Invitational, March 8-10. She bounced back to tie for 29th with a solid 231 (74-79-78) at the Northern Migration hosted by Nebraska in Florence, Ariz., March 15-17, before tying for 39th (80-78-83-241) at the BYU at Entrada Classic, March 22-23. She closed her freshman season by finishing second (78-77-155) at the Creighton Golf Classic, April 12-13, but did not earn a spot in the Huskers' lineup at the Big 12 Championships.
"Erin brings all of the qualities we like our student-athletes to possess, both on the course and in the classroom," Nebraska Coach Robin Krapfl said. "She is a great student and a talented and experienced golfer who possesses above average length and a great touch around the greens. More importantly, she is a wonderful person from an outstanding family."
High School/Amateur
Sharpee earned first-team All-Wisconsin honors in the fall of 2008, after claiming second-team all-state accolades in 2006 and 2007. She powered Green Bay Notre Dame to its third consecutive Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) team title by earning runner-up honors with a 150 over 36 holes at the 2008 state tournament. She helped Notre Dame Academy to a 630 team total for the best score in WIAA state tournament history.
Sharpee shot the Tritons into the state tournament by earning medalist honors with a 75 at the 2008 WIAA Division I sectional tournament in October. She helped Notre Dame and Coach Brian Bobinski to a 24-stroke victory.
Sharpee was both the Fox River Classic Conference Player of the Year and the Green Bay Metro champion in 2006, 2007 and 2008. She also earned all-conference and all-area honors all four years, while earning two trips to the USGA Junior Girls Championship.
In July of 2008, Sharpee captured the Wisconsin PGA Junior Championship in the girls 13-18 division with a three-under-par 141 over 36 holes at Yahara Hills Golf Course. She also posted a third-place finish at the Pepsi Little Peoples Golf Championship, in addition to her third-place finish at the USGA Girls Junior Sectional Qualifier at Weldon Spring, Mo., in June.
Sharpee competed in the championship flight of the Women’s Western National Junior Championship and had five top-10 finishes at FCWT events.
Personal
The daughter of Richard and Jeri Sharpee, Erin was born Feb. 5, 1991, in Green Bay, Wis. She plans to major in psychology. She chose Nebraska over Illinois, Minnesota, Elon, Cincinnati and Campbell.
