Senior (1982-83)
One of the early stars of Nebraska women's golf, Jan Stanard was a rock at the top of the Husker lineup for four straight seasons. A two-time All-Big Eight performer, Stanard was the team captain of NU's 1983 Big Eight title team and also played a qualifying round to compete at the 1982 NCAA Championships.
As a senior, the Aurora, Neb., native finished fourth (238) at the Big Eight Championships in Oklahoma City, trailing only Oklahoma State's Janice Burba, and NU teammates Cathy Nelson (2nd, 234) and Shelly Godeken (3rd, 237).Stanard's performance at the Big Eight Tournament capped a stellar senior season that included a career-best 78.63 stroke average over 19 rounds.
A consistent and steady performer, 14 of Stanard's 19 rounds were 80 or better as a senior, and her worst round was an 83. She fired a season-best 232 at Oklahoma's Torneo de Universitario de Golf in Monterrey, Mexico, which included a season-best 75 in the second round. She added a second-round 75 at the Iowa Invitational over spring break, and another 75 in the lone round of the Tiger Classic before the Big Eight Tournament.
Stanard opened the season with a 237 at the Susie Maxwell Berning All-College Kickoff in Oklahoma, before firing her first 232 of the year at the Iowa State Invite, which included an opening-round 75 to match her season best. She added a 241 at the KU Invitational, before sitting out the only tournament of her career at the Mizzou Invitational.
For her career, Stanard produced an impressive 80.20 stroke average over 98 rounds. She finished all four of her collegiate seasons with Nebraska's best stroke average, while competing alongside fellow All-Big Eight performers Cathy Nelson and Shelly Godeken.
Junior (1981-82)
Stanard produced an impressive junior season with a team-best 79.15 stroke average over 27 rounds, matching All-Big Eight performer Cathy Nelson at the top of NU's lineup. She fired a career-best 227 (75-76-76) to open the season at the Susie Maxwell Berning All-College Kickoff in Oklahoma. She produced five consecutive rounds of 78 or better to open the season, before settling for an 81 in the final round of the Iowa State Invitational to close at 236 in Ames. She came back with three straight rounds of 79 or better (79-77-78-234) at the Mizzou Invite, before settling for a 244 at Kansas.
She scorched the course at Oklahoma's Torneo de Universitario de Golf for a 230 in Monterrey, Mexico, before notching a 235 at Nebraska's spring break tournament. Stanard added a 238, including a career-best final-round 73 at the Sooner Invitational. After a 243 at the Iowa Invitational, Stanard settled for a 250 in a tie for 17th place with teammate Shelly Godeken at the Big Eight Championships in Ames, Iowa.
Stanard closed her third season at Nebraska by playing in a qualifying round to compete at the 1982 NCAA Championships.
Sophomore (1980-81)
An emerging star for the Huskers, Stanard solidified her spot at the top of Nebraska's lineup by earning All-Big Eight honors for the first time with a seventh-place finish at the 1981 Big Eight Championships in Lawrence, Kan. Stanard closed the three-round tournament at 234 (81-75-78), just seven strokes behind champion Dorea Mitchell and Susan Marchese, both of Oklahoma, and just two shots back of future LPGA star Val Skinner (232) from Oklahoma State.
Stanard's 234 at the Big Eight Championships matched her season best, as did her second-round 75. She also fired a 234 with a final-round 75 at the Sooner Invitational. She produced her first 75 of the season on her way to a 157 in two rounds at the Iowa State Invitational. Stanard opened the season with a 244 at the Susie Maxwell Berning All-College Kickoff in Oklahoma. She notched a 155 at the AIAW Regional VI Tournament, and shot a 156 at the Iowa Invitational. She also produced a 159 at the Mizzou Invite, while adding a 160 in two rounds at Kansas.
After competing at the Betsy Rawls Invitational and the Rayburn Country Classic to open the spring, Stanard fired a solid 239 at the Lamar Invitational to help build momentum for her performance at the Big Eight Championships.
Freshman (1979-80)
One of three true freshmen to compete for the Huskers at the Big Eight Championships, Stanard just missed All-Big Eight honors with her 11th-place finish (241) at her first conference championships in Lawrence, Kan. The Aurora, Neb., native shot steady rounds of 80-81-80 at Alvamar Hills, finishing immediately ahead of future Big Eight champions Dorea Mitchell (Oklahoma) and Janice Burba (Oklahoma State), while future LPGA star Val Skinner from OSU took the 1980 league crown. Stanard helped the Huskers to a fifth-place team finish at the Big Eight Championships.
Stanard's 241 at the conference tournament marked her season-best three-round score, while her 77 in the second round at Iowa capped a two-round score of 156. She competed for Nebraska in every tournament and posted a team-leading 81.83 stroke average over 24 rounds.
Personal
The daughter of Dr. and Mrs. J.S. Stanard, Jan was born Oct. 26, 1960, in Aurora, Neb. Jan was a four-year golf letterwinner at Aurora High School and earned one letter in track and field. Stanard was an integrated studies major at Nebraska.
