Junior (2023-24)
Lena Hassert was a regular contributor to Nebraska's lineup, competing in all 12 fall rounds for the Huskers during the fall before closing the 2023-24 season with an appearance in NU's six-player lineup at the Big Ten Championship.
Hassert opened 2023-24 by earning a spot in NU's top five at the Sam Golden Invitational. The junior from Kreuzau, Germany then produced the best tournament score of her career with a 215 (-1) that included a career-best 69 (-3) in the opening round, along with the best second-round (71) and third-round (76) scores of her career. Her tournament total at the Sam Golden Invitational was 17 strokes better than her previous career best, despite a 6,413-yard, par-72 layout at the Oakmont Country Club in Corinth, Texas. She tied for 35th individually, trailing only Michaela Vavrova and Kelli Ann Strand among the Huskers, to help Nebraska tie for fifth in a 12-team field that included seven 2023 NCAA Regional-qualifying teams.
She added a tie for 49th with a 229 (73-73-83) at the Mary Fossum Invitational in East Lansing, Mich. (Sept. 17-18). Hassert entered the final round in a tie for 13th after back-to-back rounds of 73 (+1) on the par-72, 6,370-yard layout at Forest Akers West Golf Course. She helped the Huskers to a tie for sixth in a 15-team field that featured nine 2023 NCAA Regional teams.
Hassert earned another lineup spot at the Dale McNamara Invitational (Oct. 9-10). She was Nebraska's No. 4 finisher with a 226 (76-75-75) to tie for 52nd on the par-72, 6,246-yard layout at the Golf Club of Oklahoma in Broken Arrow. She helped the Huskers to a fifth-place finish in a 14-team field that featured 10 top-100 teams.
She closed the fall by tying teammate Michaela Vavrova for 77th with a 228 (+12) in an NCAA-caliber 96-player field at the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C. (Oct. 27-29). Hassert's tournament included a final-round 71 (-1) on the 6,194-yard layout at the Country Club of Landfall for her third round better than par during the fall campaign.
Hassert finished the fall with a 74.83 stroke average over 12 rounds.
She returned to the lineup for the first time during the spring by tying for 63rd with a 238 (+22) at the Therese Hession Buckeye Invitational (April 13-14). Hassert was Nebraska's No. 5 finisher in the six-count-four event on a challenging par-72, 6,319-yard layout at the Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio. Her performance helped her earn a lineup spot at the 2024 Big Ten Championship in Harve de Grace, Md. (April 19-21), where she was Nebraska's No. 5 individual finisher in 71st at 234 (+18). Hassert's final-round 76 counted toward Nebraska's team score after opening with rounds of 81 and 77 at Bulle Rock Golf Course.
Hassert finished with a 76.11 stroke average over 18 rounds in 2023-24.
Hassert was the Austrian U16 and U18 Junior Stroke Play champion before becoming a Husker. She also tied for second at the German National Championship in 2017. In addition to her experience in Germany and Austria, Hassert has competed in England, Czechoslovakia and Malta.
Sophomore (2022-23)
Hassert opened her sophomore season by competing as an individual at the Green Wave Classic (Sept. 12-13). She produced a then-career-best score of 232, including a then-career-best 74 (+2) in the second round. Hassert tied for 72nd in an 81-golfer field.
She competed as an individual at the Big O Classic and recorded a career-best finish with a tie for 14th in a 58-golfer field. Hassert fired a 235 (74-79-82) to earn her first top-15 finish. Her 74 (+1) opening round tied her career-best round, and her best collegiate round relative to par.
Freshman (2021-22)
Hassert made her collegiate debut by earning a top-five spot in Nebraska’s lineup at the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational in Manhattan, Kan. (Sept. 20-21). She managed a three-round score of 256 (89-82-85) to finish 60th on the par-72, 6,221-yard layout at Colbert Hills Golf Club.
Hassert competed as an individual at the Stampede at The Creek (Oct. 4-5), tying for 29th with a three-round total of 245 (83-75-84). She closed the fall by competing as an individual at the White Sands Intercollegiate in the Bahamas (Oct. 22-24). She managed a three-round total of 250 (83-88-79) to finish 42nd. Hassert ended the fall with an 83.11 stroke average over nine rounds.
Before Nebraska
A two-time Austrian Stroke Play champion, Hassert was a top youth and junior competitor in Europe. She was also the runner-up at the German National Championship in 2017. More recently, Hassert was the runner-up at an Austrian Junior Golf Tour U21 event in 2020.
She competed individually throughout Europe, while also playing as a team member at the German National Girls Team Championship. She helped her Kölner Golfclub to a regional championship and a third-place national finish in 2019, before leading Golfclub Hubbelrath to a regional title in 2020.
Personal
The daughter of Ingo and Sylvia Hassert, Lena was born Nov. 1, 2003, in Dueren, Germany. She has a younger sister, Paula. A business administration major, Hassert claimed an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award in 2023. She was also a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and an Academic All-Big Ten selection. She has claimed five spots on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll and is a three-time member of the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team.
