Career Capsule
Danica Bishop was a two-year letterwinner for Nebraska in 2013 and 2014. Bishop saw limited action, appearing in nine games - all in relief - and tossing 12.0 innings over her two seasons. Bishop's action was limited as she pitched behind an All-American and a pair of first-team all-region selections both season. Bishop was effective in her limited action, allowing an earned run in only two of her nine career appearances. She did not factor into a decision during her Husker career, but Bishop did record a save against Maryland on Feb. 22, 2013.
Sophomore Season [2014]
Bishop made four relief appearances and posted a 5.25 ERA in 4.0 innings. She struggled with her control, walking nine and hitting one batter. But Bishop also proved hard to hit as she allowed only one hit in 14 at bats, as opponents hit just .071 against her.
Bishop's first action as a sophomore came when she threw a scoreless inning of reief against Sam Houston State on Feb. 16. The next weekend Bishop allowed one run on four walks and zero hits in a reief outing against No. 14 Arizona. Bishop had to wait nearly a month before her next outing, a perfect inning of relief against Jackson State on March 14, when she recorded her lone strikeout of the season. Bishop's final appearance came on March 23 against No. 16 Minnesota, when she allowed seven runs (two earned) in 1.0 inning of work.
Freshman Season [2013]
Bishop put in countless hours in the bullpen leading up to the season and during her freshman campaign. Although she saw limited action behind a pair of first-team all-region pitchers, Bishop made great strides in her development and produced impressive results when she did take the circle. Nebraska’s tallest pitcher, Bishop posted a 1.75 ERA in 8.0 innings in 2013, combining for one shutout while adding one save. She allowed an earned run in only one of her five appearances on the season, while ranking in a tie for eighth among all Big Ten pitchers in saves.
Bishop tossed a perfect inning in her career debut against New Mexico on Feb. 10 in the final game of Nebraska’s season-opening tournament in Las Cruces, N.M. She then threw a career-high 3.0 innings against Maryland back in her home state of California, earning a save after allowing only one hit and no runs against the Terrapins. The next day, Bishop came on in relief against No. 9 Oregon and struck out a career-high three batters, while allowing two runs in 2.0 innings. She faced another ranked team the next weekend, tossing 1.1 innings of scoreless, one-hit relief against the national champion Oklahoma Sooners. Her final appearance of the year came in game one of a March 20 doubleheader at North Dakota State, when she pitched two-thirds of an inning and did not allow an earned run.
Before Nebraska
Bishop was one of two freshmen pitchers from California in Nebraska’s 2012 recruiting class after starring at Woodbridge High School in Irvine, Calif. The final addition to NU’s signing class, Bishop decided to become a Husker following her official visit to Nebraska in September of 2011, just two months before she signed her letter of intent with the Huskers. She was a late find for Nebraska, as injuries had limited Bishop’s recruitment, but Bishop possesses plenty of potential and she put together a healthy and solid senior season at Woodbridge.
Bishop completed her prep career at Woodbridge High School in the spring of 2012. As the team’s ace in 2012, Bishop led the Warriors to their first appearance in the CIF playoffs in several years, which included a first-round win over Aliso Niguel. She compiled an 11-10 record against talented competition, posting a 2.47 ERA in 150.1 innings. Bishop added one save, struck out 97 and walked only 39, as opponents owned just a .289 on-base percentage against her. Bishop also contributed to Woodbridge’s success offensively, batting .386 on the season with 11 doubles, two home runs, 11 walks, 17 runs scored and 32 RBIs in only 30 games. For her efforts, Bishop was selected to participate in the Orange County Coaches all-star game following her senior season.
Bishop also experienced a wealth of success on the club level. She was a part of Mark Campbell’s Victory USA 14-and-under team that won the 2009 ASA national championship, after finishing as the runner-up the previous season. In 2010, Bishop made the jump to the 18-and-under gold level with the So Cal Athletics, who won the inaugural Premier Girls Fastpitch National Championship in a nationally-televised final on ESPN. In the summer of 2011, Bishop played for the Firecrackers-Snyder team out of Lakewood, Calif. Bishop helped lead the Firecrackers to a third-place finish in a field of more than 300 teams at the Gold Triple Crown Colorado Sprinkler tournament in Denver.
For her efforts on the club level, Bishop earned an invite to the Allister OnDeck 2010 Arizona Jamboree, an invitation-only event for elite high school softball prospects.
