Huskers Seek Third Straight Penguin Classic Title to Open 2026-27 Season

The fifth-ranked Nebraska bowling team sets off for Struthers, Ohio this week to compete in the Chelsea Gilliam Penguin Classic from Oct. 16-18 at Holiday Bowl. The Huskers are seeking their third win in Struthers in as many years.

Last year, the Big Red took down future national champions Jacksonville State as well as Arkansas State en route to the tournament title. The Huskers were led by now-graduated Jillian Martin and 2026-27 returnees Brenna Hartzler (1,075 pins, 215.0 average), Karina Capron (1,039 pins, 207.8 average) and Abby Starkey, who won Tournament MVP in her Husker debut as a freshman.

Nebraska returns eight bowlers from 2025-26: Seniors Desiree Buchert, Lani Breedlove, Ashtyn Yoches and Hartzler; Juniors Haley Swindle, Kayla Starr and Capron, with Starkey as the lone sophomore. NU welcomes three talented freshmen: Taylor Kretz, Alejandra Sandoval and Maggie Porter.

This year's Penguin Classic features a stacked lineup where 15 of 18 teams attending are in the top 25, including defending national champions No. 1 Jacksonville State, No. 2 Vanderbilt, No. 4 Arkansas State, No. 6 Youngstown State, No. 9 North Carolina A&T and No. 10 Sacred Heart.

Competition begins Friday, Oct. 16 at 8:30 a.m. (CT) with five Baker Five matches. Play resumes on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 8:25 a.m. (CT) with five traditional matches. Total pinfall from the first two days will determine seeding for Sunday's ladder bracket, when play starts at 7:25 a.m. (CT). All-tournament honorees will be selected from Saturday's top six individual finishers, with MVP decided by the tournament winner.
