Rifle Outshoots Akron in Home Opener

The No. 4 Nebraska rifle team shot its seventh-best score in program history, beating No. 15 Akron, 4743-4673. It was both teams’ season opener. 

NU swept the top five spots en route to a 1-0 start. Sophomore Carley Seabrooke led the way with an aggregate score of 1,189. She was followed by Maddy Moyer with a score of 1,187, and right behind her, Katlyn Sullivan with a score of 1,185. Alivia Perkins’ score of 1,181 and freshman Makenzie Larson’s score of 1,179 rounded out the top five. 

“It was a great first showing on the range today,” Head Coach Richard Clark said. “Going into the weekend we told the team to focus on the work that goes into the process and they did exactly that today. Across the board we saw smart fundamental performances that lead to some great numbers! Overall we couldn’t have asked for much more from the team today and we’ve got a few areas that illuminated themselves to be worked on this week before we head to Ohio State for our first road trip of the year.”

In the smallbore, the Huskers placed four shooters in the top five. As a team, NU rifle also shot the tenth-highest score in team history in the smallbore with a 2,358. Seabrooke placed first with a 593, tying the program's smallbore record for a sophomore. Moyer followed in second, breaking her personal record with a 592. Sullivan placed third with a 587, and Perkins shot a 586, which earned her a fourth-place finish. Just outside the top five, Larson had a score of 583, and Hannah Gallagher had a score of 582, earning each of them sixth and seventh place, respectively. Charlie Mick (11th, 575), Kenly Downey (12th, 574) and Grace Corbett (14th, 572) rounded out the Nebraska smallbore lineup. 

The Big Red didn’t stop there, sweeping the top five in the air rifle with a total score of 2,385, tying the fifth-highest score in program history. Sullivan placed first for the Huskers with a score of 598, tying the air rifle record for a sophomore. Right behind her, Seabrooke and Larson each shot a 596, placing second and third. Moyer and Perkins also tied with a score of 595, earning them the fourth and fifth spots. Mick (7th, 591), Downey (8th, 591), Corbett (9th, 589) and Gallagher (13th, 584) finished out the Husker air rifle lineup. 

Nebraska hits the road for its next match, traveling to Columbus to take on Ohio St. The match is set to begin at 8 a.m. (CT) on October 3.
