Huskers Tee Off Fall Campaign at Harbor Cup

Benge Leads Large Crop of Homegrown Huskers
Jackson Benge headlines an impressive  crop of six homegrown Nebraska golfers on the 2026-27 Husker roster.

A third-year Husker from Omaha, Benge competed in all 38 rounds for the Big Red and produced the team’s top returning stroke average (71.76) a year ago. He also posted eight top-25 finishes, including Nebraska’s best conference tournament finish (13th) since Brady Schnell’s third-place showing in 2007.

The Omaha Westside grad is joined by fellow Omahan Tommy Kelley, Lincolnites Thomas Bryson, Gavin Gerch and Zack Erstad, along with Jaxson Hinze (York) in giving the Cornhusker State its largest contingent on the Nebraska men’s golf roster since seven Nebraskans filled an 11-player roster in 2008-09.

The 2026-27 Husker roster also features the highest percentage (66.7) of native Nebraskans since five, including current head coach Judd Cornell, filled a seven-player Big Red roster in 2003-04 (71.4 percent).

Gerch, a junior out of Lincoln Southeast, spent his first two seasons at Creighton where he was one of the top golfers on the Jays roster. He was a high school teammate of Bryson, who competed in six rounds and posted a pair of top-25 finishes for the Huskers as a true freshman a year ago.

Kelley (Omaha Creighton Prep) and Hinze (York) have been two of the state’s most highly rated recruits as junior golfers the past several years. Hinze was the 2025 Nebraska Junior Amateur Champion, while Kelley claimed the title in 2026.

Erstad, a true freshman who joined the Husker roster on June 30, led Lincoln East High School to back-to-back Class A state championships in 2025 and 2026. He was the Class A individual runner-up in 2026 and was the Nebraska Junior PGA Champion in 2025.

Mickelson Set for Strong Sophomore Season
Caden Mickelson made a major impact on the Husker lineup as a freshman and will be looking for more in his second season in 2026-27.

Mickelson set the Nebraska freshman stroke average record (72.14) over 37 rounds. He set another freshman record with his 201 (-12) to tie for third at the 2025 Git-R-Done Invitational. It was one of five top-25 finishes for Mickelson a year ago.

During the summer of 2026, Mickelson won the Indian Creek Invitational in Elkhorn with rounds of 67 (-5) and 68 (-4) to qualify for the Pinnacle Bank Championship presented by Woodhouse on the Korn Ferry Tour. He managed rounds of 74 and 72, but did not make the cut to compete in the third of four rounds.

McDermott Provides Experience to Young Huskers
Fifth-year Husker Evan McDermott is the most experienced golfer on the Big Red roster. The graduate student from Spring Lake, Mich., has played in 85 rounds and posted a 73.80 stroke average in his Nebraska career.

Last season, McDermott put up a career-best 73.15 stroke over in a career-high 33 rounds, despite being challenged by a nagging injury that limited his progress.

McDermott enters his final season as a Husker with eight career top-25 finishes. The two-time GCAA Scholar All-American and three-time Academic All-Big Ten choice earned his bachelor’s degree as a mechanical engineering major from Nebraska in May 2026.

Cornhusker Connections
Nebraska’s nine-player roster features its share of strong family connections to the state and the Huskers.

Freshman Zack Erstad’s father, Darin, was an All-American outfielder at Nebraska and the No. 1 pick in the 1995 MLB Draft. A two-time MLB All-Star and three-time Gold Glove winner, Darin Erstad was a 2002 World Series champion with the Los Angeles Angels and spent 14 years in the Majors. He was also the starting punter on Nebraska’s 1994 national championship football team. The elder Erstad was Nebraska’s head baseball coach from 2012 to 2019, leading the Big Red to four NCAA Regional appearances. He was the 2017 Big Ten Coach of the Year after leading Nebraska to the conference regular-season title.

Junior Gavin Gerch’s father, Andy, was also an outstanding outfielder for the Huskers. A member of the 2005 College World Series All-Tournament Team, Andy Gerch was the Most Outstanding Player of the 2005 NCAA Lincoln Regional as a freshman. He was also a member of the 2007 NCAA Tempe Regional All-Tournament Team.

Sophomore Thomas Bryson has the strongest family ties to Husker golf. His father, Kevin, was a four-year letterwinner for Nebraska from 2000 to 2003, while his mother, Beth Anne (Cherry) Bryson, was a four-time letterwinner for the Husker women’s golf team from 2002 to 2005. She was a member of three Nebraska NCAA Regional teams, including the 2003 team that advanced to the NCAA Championships and finished 22nd.

Junior Jackson Benge also has a connection with the Husker women’s golf program. His mother, Amy (Roux) Benge, helped Nebraska to its first NCAA Championship appearance in 2000. She was a four-time letterwinner (1998-2001).

Benge is also a cousin of Nebraska baseball All-American Alex Gordon (2003-05), who won a World Series with the Kansas City Royals and was a Major League Gold Glove winner. Benge is also the nephew of Nebraska men’s gymnastics All-American Ted Harris (1994-97).

Finally, Husker graduate student Evan McDermott is the nephew of former Creighton men’s basketball coach Greg McDermott and the cousin of current Sacramento King Doug McDermott. Greg McDermott was also a head coach at Wayne State (Neb.), North Dakota State, Northern Iowa and Iowa State before retiring from Creighton after 16 seasons in 2026.

Schedule to Challenge Huskers from Start to Finish
The Huskers open the 2026-27 season with their first-ever trip to the New York Harbor Cup in Bayonne, N.J. (Aug. 31-Sept. 1), before returning to the Bearcat Invitational (Sept. 14-15) for the second straight season. Nebraska posted a fourth-place finish in a strong 18-team field in Cincinnati a year ago.

The Big Red also return to the Gopher Invitational (Sept. 20-21) after managing a top-10 team finish in Maple Plain, Minn., last season.

Nebraska turns the calendar to October by traveling to The Blessings Collegiate in Fayetteville, Ark. (Oct. 3-5), before traveling to Vero Beach, Fla., for the Quail Valley Collegiate (Oct. 18-19).

The Huskers close the fall by traveling to Loxley, Ala., for the Steelwood Collegiate (Oct. 31-Nov. 1) for the third consecutive season.

Nebraska will take November, December and January off from competition before returning to the course for The Prestige in La Quinta, Calif. (Feb. 15-17).

A month later, the Big Red will be back in action at The Johnnie-O at St. Simons Island, Ga. (March 15-16), before heading to Florida for the GameAbove Collegiate in Ponte Vedra Beach (March 21-22).

The Huskers hit the home stretch of their regular-season schedule by traveling to Missouri for the Tiger Invitational (April 5-6), before heading to the Rutgers Invitational in Bedminster, N.J. (April 17-18).

The Big Red will make its third trip of the season to New Jersey for the Big Ten Championship in Springfield (April 30-May 2).

NCAA Regional play begins May 17-19.
