NU Wraps Up Weekend With Wins Over Kentucky, Alaska-Fairbanks

The No. 2 Nebraska rifle team placed first in a three-team match on Sunday, Jan. 18. The Huskers avenged yesterday’s loss to No. 1 Kentucky by defeating the Wildcats, 4,740-4,733, and topped No. 9 Alaska-Fairbanks, 4,740-4,734. NU moves to 15-1 after the busy weekend in Fairbanks.

“It was great to come away with the win against two incredibly talented teams today,” Head Coach Richard Clark said. “That being said, as a team our performance was not representative of the work we have been putting in. We have to work on putting complete matches together as we move forward this spring.”

The Big Red placed three shooters in the top five overall. Freshman Carley Seabrooke placed second, shooting an aggregate score of 1,188, followed in third by senior Emma Rhode with her score of 1,187. Katlyn Sullivan rounded out the top five with a mark of 1,186.

“On an individual basis we had some great highs this weekend,” Clark said. “I’m incredibly proud of Katlyn and Carley who stepped up in a big way helping lead the way during both matches. It was very fun to watch Camilla shoot her PR in smallbore yesterday and follow it up again with a great match today!”

Three Huskers placed in the top five in the smallbore as the team shot a score of 2,361. Seabrooke and Rhode grabbed second and third place respectively, both shooting scores of 592. The tiebreaker was determined by the number of ten-point shots by each athlete. Sullivan took fifth place with her score of 590. Camilla Johannessen (eighth, 587), Maddy Moyer (ninth, 587) and Alivia Perkins (10th, 586) finished out the top ten, and Hannah Gallagher (19th, 581) and Grace Corbett (24th, 571) rounded out the smallbore lineup for the Big Red.

In an overall high-scoring day in the air rifle. Sullivan and Seabrooke led the team, both shooting scores of 596 and placing seventh and 10th respectively. Rhode followed in 11th place with a mark of 595. Gallagher (19th, 593), Moyer (21st, 592), Johannessen (22nd, 591), Perkins (23rd, 590) and Corbett (24th, 578) finished out the lineup for NU in the air rifle.

“Overall we are pleased with the start to the spring,” Clark said. “While there are areas we have to clean up, we have lots of momentum to carry us through our championship segment.”

The Huskers will take a week off from competition before returning home for a weekend of competition against Jacksonville State on Saturday, Jan. 31 and Sunday, Feb. 1 in what will be the final regular season match for the Big Red. Matches will start at 8 a.m. (CT) both days and will be hosted at the Nebraska Rifle Range in Lincoln, Neb.
