Huskers Split Spring Opener

The No. 2 Nebraska rifle team placed second in a three-team match, falling to No. 1 Kentucky, 4,759-4,746, and defeating No. 9 Alaska-Fairbanks, 4,746-4,730. The Wildcats give the Huskers their first loss of the season, as the Big Red move to 13-1 along with the win over the Nanooks.

NU placed just one shooter in the top five, with freshman Carley Seabrooke placing third overall with an aggregate score of 1,188.

“I’m very happy with the way the team performed today," Head Coach Richard Clark said. "Coming off the long winter break and jumping into a high pressure match and picking things up right where we left them in the fall is a great way to start our spring season. There are a few minor details that costs us some much wanted points today but the best part about the weekend is we get to learn from today and go out and make tomorrows opportunity to perform a better one.”

In the smallbore, two Nebraska shooters placed in the top five overall on the way to a team score of 2,362. Sophomore Alivia Perkins placed fourth with a score of 592 and Seabrooke followed in fifth, also shooting a 592. The tiebreaker was determined by the number of 10-point shots by each athlete. Katlyn Sullivan placed ninth with her score of 590, and Emma Rhode took 11th with a mark of 588. Camilla Johannessen (12th, 588), Maddy Moyer (13th, 587), Hannah Gallagher (22nd, 582) and Grace Corbett (24th, 572) finished out the lineup for the Big Red.

Rhode was the lone Husker in the top five in the air rifle, as she shot a score of 599. Sullivan and Seabrooke took ninth and tenth, both shooting scores of 596. Moyer (16th, 593), Perkins (17th, 592), Johannessen (22nd, 586), Gallagher (23rd, 586) and Corbett (24th, 583) rounded out the lineup in the air rifle for NU.

Nebraska will return to competition tomorrow, once again facing off against No. 1 Kentucky and No. 9 Alaska-Fairbanks on Sunday, Jan. 18.
