Huskers Top Ohio State in Record-Setting Season Opener

The No. 11 Nebraska rifle team shot the second-highest aggregate score in program history to defeat No. 12 Ohio State 4,729-4,688 on Saturday in Lincoln in the season opener for both teams.

NU placed four shooters in the top five overall to improve to 1-0. Senior Emma Rhode placed first with an aggregate score of 1,187, followed by freshmen Carley Seabrooke and Katlyn Sullivan, both shooting scores of 1,181. Sophomore Maddy Moyer placed fourth with a mark of 1,180.

“Today was a good day on the range," said Head Coach Richard Clark. "The team came in and stayed true to who they are day in day out at practice. With that, we got to see some really great results. Getting to open the season and new range with a program record in air rifle and second highest aggregate score in school history is a great feeling the team gets to take with them into practice next week. I’m super proud of our freshmen and how they handled the nerves of their first collegiate match, especially Katlyn firing the new individual program air record. All together it was a great start across the board, now we’ll get back to practice on Monday and continue to work on the little things.”

In the smallbore, three Huskers placed in the top five. Rhode took first with a mark of 589, followed by Moyer in second with a score of 587, while Seabrooke was fifth with her score of 585. Alivia Perkins placed sixth with a mark of 582, followed by Sullivan, who also shot a 582. Camilla Johannessen (11th, 577), Grace Corbett (12th, 577), Charlie Mick (13th, 572) and Hannah Gallagher (15th, 570) rounded out the smallbore lineup for the Big Red.

Nebraska swept the top five spots to secure a school-record score of 2,386 in the air rifle. Sullivan also shot a single-game individual record in the air rifle with her score of 599, placing first. She was followed by Rhode, who shot a score of 598, tying the second-highest individual air rifle score in team history. Seabrooke placed third with a score of 596, Moyer took fourth with her score of 593, and Mick placed fifth with a mark of 592. Corbett (seventh, 591), Johannessen (11th, 586) and Gallagher (12th, 586) finished out the lineup for NU in the air rifle.

Nebraska will stay at home for its next match where the Huskers will take on UAB on Saturday, Oct. 11. The match is set to begin at 8 a.m. (CT).
