Huskers Prepare for Big Ten Championship

Written byJeff Griesch
The Nebraska women’s golf team heads to Maryland to battle for the Big Ten Championship this weekend (April 18-20).

The three-day, 54-hole event on the 6,225-yard, par-72 layout of the Bulle Rock Golf Course in Havre de Grace opens with tee times off No. 1 and No. 10 on Friday, April 18 at 7:30 a.m. (CT). The tournament continues with the same schedule on Saturday, April 19, before concluding with Sunday’s final round at 7 a.m. (CT).

The Huskers will be part of an 18-team field that features seven top-50 teams, including No. 5 Oregon, No. 7 USC, No. 10 Northwestern, No. 17 Ohio State, No. 25 Michigan State, No. 27 UCLA and No. 41 Purdue, along with eight more top-100 schools in No. 51 Illinois, No. 58 Washington, No. 59 Maryland, No. 64 Indiana, No. 71 Michigan, No. 72 Minnesota, No. 77 Wisconsin and No. 99 Iowa. No. 107 Penn State, No. 115 Rutgers and No. 136 Nebraska round out the tournament field.

The Huskers, who have qualified for NCAA Regional competition in two of the past three seasons, will be led by Miu Takahashi. The senior from Nasu-machi, Japan, was the Big Ten Golfer of the Week (March 20), after leading Nebraska with a fifth-place finish with a 215 (-1) at the Spring Break Shootout (March 17-18). Most recently, Takahashi led the Big Red with a tie for 11th (219) at the Terps Invitational in College Park (April 6-7).

Takahashi carries a team-best 74.40 stroke average as the only Husker to compete in all 30 rounds this season. She is the only Husker in the lineup with Big Ten Championship experience, as she is joined by a pair of sophomore transfers and a trio of true freshmen in one of the conference’s youngest lineups.

Hannah Kono will play out of the No. 2 spot in the Husker lineup in Maryland. The sophomore from Enkoping, Sweden will be making her first Big Ten Championship appearance after transferring from Oakland University. She owns four top-25 finishes this season, while ranking second among the Huskers with a 74.67 stroke average on the year.

True freshmen Danica Lundgren will occupy the No. 3 spot, while redshirt sophomore Symran Shah will compete at No. 4. Lundgren ranks third among the Huskers with a 75.00 stroke average, while placing in the top 35 in five of her seven events this season. Shah, a transfer from Virginia Tech, will be making her fourth lineup appearance of the season for the Big Red.

True freshmen Eden Lohrbach (Ames, Iowa) and Olivia Lovegrove (Lincoln, Neb.) will round out the five and six spots in Nebraska’s six-count-four lineup in Maryland.

USC’s Jasmine Koo is the top-ranked individual in the field at No. 2, while Oregon’s Kiara Romero comes in at No. 5. USC’s Catherine Park (14), Ohio State’s Kary Hollenbaugh (17) and Oregon’s Suvichaya Vinijchaitham (21) put five Big Ten golfers in the top 25.
