Lundgren Leads Huskers with Career Best in Orlando

Danica Lundgren fired a career-best 67 (-5) in the final round of the PDI Intercollegiate - hosted by UCF on Tuesday to finish in a tie for third overall in a loaded 96-player field with a career-best three-round total of 207 (-9).

Lundgren, a true freshman from Austin, Texas, closed an outstanding tournament with a final round that included five birdies and 13 pars on the 6,392-yard layout at the Eagle Creek Golf Club. Her performance on Tuesday followed an even-par 72 in Monday's second round. Lundgren opened the 54-hole event with a then-career-best 68 in Sunday's first round.

During the fall season, Lundgren produced a pair of then-career-best 73s among her six rounds of action and a then-career-best 224 on her way to a runner-up finish at the Big O Classic. 

Lundgren defeated 17 golfers who were ranked among the top 140 golfers nationally at the PDI Intercollegiate.

Miu Takahashi added her best performance of the season as well, tying for 11th with a career-best three-round total of 209 (-7), including a final-round 70 (-2) on Tuesday. Takahashi, who opened with a career-best 67 (-5) on Sunday, matched Lundgren with an even-par 72 in Monday's second round. The senior from Nasu-machi, Japan, eclipsed her previous career-best 211 (-5) set last year at the Westbrook Spring Invitational, while her opening-round 67 was one shot better than her previous career-best 68 (-4) set as a freshman at the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational.

"It was fun to watch Danica and Miu go low," Nebraska Head Coach Jeanne Sutherland said. "We saw some good things to start the spring season. We played two solid rounds, and we can build on this start."

As a team, Nebraska finished 12th in a 17-team field with a three-round total of 862 (-2). The Huskers defeated Big Ten counterpart Indiana by 13 strokes, but finished one shot back of Penn State (861). The top six teams in the tournament field were ranked among the top 40 in the country, including the tournament champions from No. 27 Baylor (834, -30), No. 18 Duke (836, -28), No. 13 North Carolina (840, -24) and No. 10 Mississippi State (841, -23). The hosts from No. 36 UCF (841, -23) and No. 24 Kansas (843, -21) rounded out the top six finishers.

KU's Lauren Clark ran away with the individual title with a 54-hole score of 201 (-15), while Baylor's Silje Ohma took second at 206 (-10), just one shot ahead of Lundgren, who finished in a four-way tie for third.

Sophomore Arden Louchheim, who opened with a 73 (+1) that included an eagle on the 484-yard, par-5 13th hole, on Sunday and closed with a 73 (+1) on Tuesday was Nebraska's No. 3 finisher with a season-best 220 (+4). She tied for 63rd.

Redshirt sophomores Symran Shah and Lauren Thiele rounded out Nebraska's lineup. Shah finished 88th at 229 (+13), while Thiele took 89th at 230 (+14), including a final-round 76 (+4) to complete Nebraska's third-round 286 (-2).

True freshman Eden Lohrbach tied for 80th at 225 (+9) while playing as an individual outside the Husker lineup. Lohrbach fired an even-par 72 in the second round before closing with a 73 (+1) on Tuesday.

As a team, Nebraska ended the tournament with 47 birdies and one eagle, while dedicating all of them to Hope Pinkelman, a young girl from Omaha who recently began treatment for leukemia.

The Huskers will be back in action in three weeks at the Westbrook Spring Invitational (Feb. 23-24) in Peoria, Ariz.
