Tanko Breaks School Record on Third Day of Big Ten Championships

Nebraska swimming and diving closed the third day of the Big Ten Championships, hosted in West Lafayette, Ind., with a school record, a podium finish and 10 finals qualifications.

Beatrix Tanko broke the 100 butterfly school record, while touching the wall second in the B final. The freshman from Budapest, Hungary swam a 54.01 in prelims to book a spot in the final, where she went on to swim the record time of 53.16 and place 10th overall. Tanko’s time in the finals edged the previous record of 53.21, held by Taryn Collura (2016). Anna Vlachou, Lexi Kucera, Caitlin Cairns and Anastasia Tichy competed in the C final of the 100 butterfly and earned 21st-24th-place finishes, respectively.

Maia Hall swam a 1:01.11 in the 100 breaststroke prelim to earn a spot in the A final. The junior from Whitby, England came just shy of the school record in the final, clocking a 1:00.16 to place fifth overall.

JoJo Randby, the current school record holder in the event, logged a 13th-place finish overall after swimming a 1:01.65 in the 100 breaststroke B final. Amelia Riggott took 21st for the Huskers with a career-best time of 1:02.45 in the C final, and Sydney McCracken added a 23rd-place finish in the C final (1:03.11).

Gena Jorgenson captured 20th overall in the 400 IM, swimming a 4:14.78 in the C final. The sophomore from Aberdeen, S.D. dropped her career-best in the event by over a second a day after setting the 500 freestyle school record. Sarah Barton finished 30th in prelims with a time of 4:22.45.

Kucera and Giulia Marchi grabbed 32nd and 36th in the 200 freestyle prelims with times of 1:49.58 and 1:51.40. 

Cairns and Gabby Donahue finished 28th and 33rd in the 100 backstroke competition, posting times of 55.26 and 56.79. 

On the three meter, Abby Baxter logged a 17th-place finish for the Huskers to score points. The freshman from Coppell, Texas earned a score of 259.30. Antonina Harned finished 25th (243.05).

A team of Cairns, Vlachou, Tanko and Emily Haimes finished ninth for Nebraska in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:32.12.

The Huskers are currently in ninth place and will have one more day of competition beginning with prelims at 9 a.m. (CT) tomorrow morning.
