Huskers Travel to Scottsdale for West Coast Alumni Match

Scottsdale, Ariz. - After a fourth-place finish at the Big Ten Match Play Championships, the Nebraska Men's Golf Team will be back on the road this weekend, as they head to Scottsdale, Ariz., for the West Coast Alumni Match at the Whisper Rock Golf Club. The team will be competing against each other and other alumni in preparation for the rest of their spring season which will start up on March 7-8 at the Desert Mountain Invitational at the Outlaw Golf Club in Desert Mountain, Ariz. 

Nebraska comes off a successful showing at the Big Ten Match Play Championship on Feb. 7-8. The Huskers came in as the 13th seed out of 13 teams but would pull off two upsets against Ohio State (3-3 Won Tiebreaker) and Michigan State (3.5-2.5). The two wins would send the Huskers to the semifinals against first-seeded Northwestern. The Huskers would fall 4-2 sending them to the third-place match. The Huskers would face the Maryland Terrapins and had control for the majority of the match but was unable to pull away in the final five holes, leaving the door open for the Terrapins. Maryland would take advantage and pull out a 3.5-2.5 win over the Huskers to give the Huskers fourth place. 

Sophomore Caleb Badura and junior Branden Meyer were the leaders for the Huskers, as Badura would finish 4-0 on the weekend to become the first Husker to finish 4-0 at the Big Ten Match Play Championships. Meyer would drop just one match on the weekend to finish with a record of 3-1. 

Huskers Look to Newcomers for Spring Season
The Huskers will need to look to the youth this upcoming spring as 45 out of the 60 total rounds played in the fall season were played by players who were new to the team for the 2019-2020 season.

Senior Tanner Owen led the way for the Huskers in the fall competing in all four tournaments with a 74.50 scoring average. Owen had his best finish ever as a Husker at the Prairie Club Invitational where he finished third while firing a 217 (-2).

Junior Branden Meyer hopes to continue to improve in his first season as a Husker. Meyer was the only other Husker to compete in all four tournaments and ended the fall season second on the team in scoring average with a 75.58. His best finish also came at the Prairie Club Invitational where he tied for a season best 224 (+5) to tie for 11th. 

Newcomers Mark Foelbaek, Caleb Badura and Tom Westenberge each played in three tournaments this fall with Westenberger having the best scoring average of a 76.55 with his best finish coming at the Maridoe Intercollegiate where he tied for 14th against a very talented field.

Badura finished fourth on the team in scoring average averaging 77.44 strokes per round. Foelbaek was right behind Badura in fifth with an average of 78.44.

Freshman Will Marshall played in two tournaments in the fall with his best finish coming at the Maridoe Intercollegiate where he finished tied for 45th but was in the top 10 after firing a first round score of 73 (+1). 

Sophomore Tristan Nelko was the only other Husker to compete in any tournaments, as he competed in just one tournament in the fall at the Rod Meyers/Duke Invitational where he shot a 236 (+20) and tied for 66th.
