Huskers Host Top-Ranked West Virginia for Home Opener

The Nebraska rifle team will host the first home match of the season against the nation's top-ranked team, West Virginia, at the Nebraska Rifle range on Oct. 12. Match action is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

No. 1 West Virginia comes to Lincoln after finishing as runner-up at the NCAA Championships last season. This will be the Mountaineers' first match In 2019-20.
Nebraska holds a 7-37 all-time record against West Virginia dating back to 1999 and looks to add another victory. The shooter to watch for West Virginia is senior Milica Babic, who was the 2017 NCAA Air Rifle Champion and is a returning All-American.
 
Last Time Out
 
The Nebraska rifle team opened the 2019-20 season on Saturday with a 4,651-4,635 win over Ohio State in Fort Wayne, Ind., on Oct. 5. The Huskers posted a team score of 2,296 in smallbore, led by sophomore Elena Flake's career-high mark of 578, followed closely by senior Samantha Peterson with 577. Junior Emily Cheramie and senior Bailey Powell fired 572 and 571, respectively. Senior Maddie Korthas shot 555 to round out the squadded members. 
 
Freshman Macey Way led the Huskers in air rifle in her first collegiate match with 590, which was the highest air rifle score of "The X Count" event. Flake and Peterson both shot 589, which meant the Huskers finished first, second and third in the individual air rifle standings. Cheramie (587) and Korthas (572) completed the Huskers' squadded effort. Nebraska's team score in air rifle was 2,355. Although not squadded, Powell fired 589 and Aletto tied a career best with 587.

Fans can come watch the Huskers compete in the Military and Naval Science Building this weekend, located on the northwest corner of 14th and Vine in Lincoln. Admission is free.
