The seventh-ranked Nebraska rifle team hosts defending champion Kentucky on Saturday in its first match of the 2018-19 season. The Huskers hold an all-time record of 12-35 against UK, dating back to 1999. Match action will begin at 8 a.m. in the Nebraska Rifle Range, located in the lower level of the Military and Naval Science building on 14th and Vine.
Breaking Down the Huskers
Nebraska enters the 2018-19 season after breaking a school record by appearing in the NCAA Championships for the sixth consecutive year in 2017-18.
Head coach Ashley MacAllister enters her fifth season as head coach. She has produced five All-Americans during her time at Nebraska. MacAllister is joined by assistant coach Rick Johnson, who enters his fourth season with the Huskers in 2018-19.
Seniors Nina Radulovic, Hannah Virga and Rachel Yager will be relied upon as sources of leadership for Nebraska this season. All three saw significant action in 2017-18 and will be expected to lead the Huskers both on and off the range.
The Huskers retain a solid junior class in addition to the three seniors, including All-American Samantha Peterson. She is joined by Kayla Gadeken, Maddie Korthas, Sarah Sutton and transfer Bailey Powell. All five will seek to step into leadership roles on and off the range following the graduation of All-American Dacotah Faught.
Sophomores Mari Butler, Emily Cheramie and Elizabeth Ewert round out the list of returners. Cheramie saw the most action in 2017-18 as a squadded member of the smallbore team for every match including the GARC and NCAA Championships. Butler and Ewert saw limited action in 2017-18 but will look to be regular contributors in 2018-19.
Three incoming freshmen join the returners. Kinga Aletto (Sarasota, Fla.), Elena Flake (Brunswick, Maine) and Elizabeth Lorentz (Seely Lake, Mont.) will look to be regular contributors to the team in their debut season.
Scouting the Wildcats
Kentucky takes the range after an outstanding 2017-18 season that culminated in a first-place at the 2018 NCAA Championships.
Hanna Carr is the shooter to watch for Kentucky. The senior is a seven-time All-American and regularly shoots over 585 and 590 in smallbore and air rifle, respectively.
Other returners include seniors Carmen Fry, Cathryn Papasodora and Jason Spaude. Papasodora has fired over 590 in air rifle eight times and was named GARC All-Conference in 2018.
The Wildcats shot over 4,700 as a team on seven occasions last season and lost only three matches, falling to TCU once and West Virginia twice.
This match will serve as Kentucky’s first of the 2018-19 season. The team will host Murray State and Morehead State next weekend.
