Walks Hurt Huskers in Series-Opening Loss

Lincoln – Nebraska’s pitching staff issued 17 walks on Friday night in a 17-5 loss to the Wichita State Shockers. The Huskers held a 3-0 lead after the fourth inning, but then the Shockers scored in each of the next six innings on their way to their first road win of the season.

It was the most walks by a Husker staff since 2010 when NU walked 12 at Missouri. It is the most walks issued dating back to at least 1999, while Nebraska’s single-game record for walks is 20, also against Wichita State, set on April 8, 1987.

NU starter Derek Burkamper cruised through the first four innings, extending his season scoreless streak to 16.0 innings. After retiring his eighth straight batter to start the fifth, the wheels then fell off for Burkamper when he couldn’t find the strike zone. Burkamper walked the bases loaded and then Tanner Kirk delivered a two RBI single that cut NU’s lead in half, 4-2. Nebraska went to reliever Jeff Chesnut and Mikel Mucha welcomed him with a RBI single. Following the fourth walk of the inning, Ryan Tinkham lifted a sacrifice fly to deep center field and Kirk scored to give WSU a 4-3 lead.

Nebraska had a shot to retake the lead in the fifth when a two-out walk to Scott Schreiber loaded the bases. Jake Meyers put a good swing on the first pitch he saw from WSU starter Willie Schwanke, but Meyers lined out to right field.

After WSU added a run in the top of the sixth, Elijah Dilday opened the bottom of the frame with his second single of the game and Taylor Fish reached on WSU’s third error of the game. Jake Schleppenbach then beat out a bunt and the Huskers had the bases loaded with no out. Steven Reveles stepped in an hit a line drive, but Kirk made a diving catch to rob Reveles of at least one RBI. The Husker lineup rolled over and Ryan Boldt hit into a fielder’s choice, but Dilday scored on the play. With runners on the corners, Schwanke got Jake Placzek to pop up to Kirk, keeping WSU ahead, 5-4.

WSU answered with five runs in the top of the seventh and went into cruise control. They added a run in the eighth and then six more in the ninth.

The Huskers and Shockers play game two of their three-game series tomorrow at 2:05 p.m.
