Lincoln – The Nebraska baseball team completed a doubleheader sweep of the Loyola Marymount Lions on Friday night at Hawks Field with a 7-0 win, after taking game one 6-4 on a walk-off home run by Steven Reveles. The Huskers have now recorded two shutouts this week and three on the season.
The NU offense recorded all of its runs and hits in two innings, notching four runs on two hits in the first and three runs on four hits in the sixth. Taylor Fish had the biggest hit of the night, as he hit his first career home run in the first inning.
The Huskers got 7.0 shutout innings from Derek Burkamper after he tossed 5.0 shutout innings last weekend in Long Beach in his first start of the season. The junior right hander gave up three hits and one walk, while striking out seven. After allowing a leadoff single in the fourth, Burkamper retired the final 12 Lion batters he faced.
Sophomores Reece Eddins and Zack Engelken each tossed a scoreless inning of relief to polish off the shutout.
After ending game one with a homer, the Husker offense went right back to work in the bottom of the first of game two. Ryan Boldt started the frame with a walk and when he swiped second base he then took third on a throwing error by LMU’s catcher. Ben Miller stepped in and picked up his ninth RBI of the season with a single that scored Boldt. Jake Meyers then worked a walk to put two runners on for Fish and the senior lifted an 0-1 offering from LMU starter Brenton Arriaga over the left-field fence for a three-run home run.
With Burkamper cruising the Huskers were shutout over the next four innings but then gave their starter an even bigger cushion with three more runs in the sixth, pushing the lead to 7-0.
In game two, the Lions had a runner in scoring position just three times on the night and were retired in order on five occasions.
The Huskers and Lions will be back at Hawks Field tomorrow for the third game of their four game series. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m.
