Lincoln – After being shutout in the series opener last night, the Red team posted a 6-2 victory over the White squad on Wednesday evening at Hawks Field to even the three-game Red-White Series. The rubber match of the series is set for 6 p.m. tomorrow night.
The White squad jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, but couldn’t hold on. A trio of freshmen created the runs for the White team, as Jesse Wilkening worked a leadoff walk, Ben Klenke then drove in Wilkening in with a triple and Mike Waldron picked up his third RBI of the series with a groundout.
For the first time in the series the Red team got on the board in the top of the fourth, evening the score at 2-2. Cole Klemke got the offense started with a one-out single and then scored on a double by Alex Henwood. Sophomore Jake Meyers then delivered a RBI triple before Sean Chandler retired two straight batters to keep the Reds from taking the lead.
After Chad Luensmann retired the Whites in order in the bottom of the fourth, the Reds took the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. Angelo Altavilla started the frame with a single and scored on a double by Brady Childs. Later in the inning, Henwood picked up his second RBI of the game with a single that gave the Reds a 4-2 lead.
The Reds scored a pair of runs for the third straight inning in the sixth, as Taylor Fish drove in a run with a single and later scored with two outs when Jake Schleppenbach dropped an infield pop-up.
With a 6-2 lead, Luensmann gave up a leadoff single to Wilkening in the bottom of the sixth. Luensmann then struck out Klenke before Waldron worked a walk to put two runners on. Luensmann picked up another strikeout before getting Schleppenbach to ground out to end the game.
