WIchita State snapped an 11-game losing streak to the Huskers...Nebraska fell to 0-4 in true road games this season...NU was held to season lows of one run and three hits...freshman Caitlin Bartsch threw a career-high 3.0 innings and allowed only one run...sophomore Kat Woolman saw the first action of her career at second base. |
Wichita, Kan. - Wichita State hit four home runs and the Shockers scored in five of their six turns at bat to defeat the Nebraska softball team, 7-1, Saturday night at Wilkins Stadium.
The Huskers fell to 7-10 with the loss, earning a two-game split on the first day of the Shocker Invitational. Sophomore Cassie McClure (3-2) took the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits in 2.0 innings. Both of Nebraska's freshmen pitchers also saw action. Kaylan Jablonski surrendered one run on one hit in 1.0 inning, while Caitlin Bartsch threw a career-high 3.0 innings, allowing only one run.
Offensively, Nebraska was held to a season-low three hits by Wichita State ace Katie Malone (7-4). The Huskers got a single and a solo home run from McClure and a single from junior Mattie Fowler, but those were the only three base runners Nebraska had in the game.
Wichita State improved to 13-9 with its fourth straight win.
WSU scored an unconventional run to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The Shockers began the inning with back-to-back singles before a ground out moved the runners up to second and third. Liz Broyles then hit a ground ball to junior shortstop Alicia Armstrong, who threw home. Following a short rundown, the Huskers tagged out the runner attempting to score. Sophomore third baseman MJ Knighten then threw to second to try and get Broyles advancing to second, but her throw was late and in the dirt as Kelli Spring snuck home before Nebraska could recover.
The Shockers added another run in the bottom of the second. Following a leadoff single, Wichita State laid down a bunt that Nebraska fielded cleanly, but no one covered first base. The missed out cost the Huskers on a two-out, bases-loaded walk that put Wichita State in front 2-0.
WSU then began the bottom of the third inning with back-to-back home runs to take a 4-0 lead. The Shockers added a third run in the frame on a pinch-hit, RBI double with one out.
Nebraska got a run back in the top of the fourth on a two-out, opposite-field solo home run from McClure.
The Shockers answered when Broyles led off the bottom of the frame with her second homer of the game - and second leadoff homer in as many innings - to make the score 6-1. Wichita State threatened to add more with two on and none out, but Bartsch came on in relief and got a double play to escape the jam without allowing any of the inherited runners to score.
Wichita State tacked on its final run when Erin Carney hit the Shockers' fourth home run of the game with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Nebraska closes out its stay in Wichita with back-to-back games on Sunday against South Dakota and Wichita State beginning at Noon.
