Los Angeles, Calif.--The No. 7 Nebraska women’s gymnastics team (7-2, 4-1 Big Ten) grabbed second in the Los Angeles quadrangular Saturday night, falling to UCLA (6-1, 5-1 Pac-12) 197.050-196.650.
A combined effort across all classes helped lead the Huskers to its second place finish on the West Coast. Sophomore Ashley Lambert earned a career-high 9.95 on floor to tie with UCLA’s Danusia Francis for the title. On vault, senior Desire’ Stephens stuck a 9.90 to pace the Big Red, as DeZiel led the bars lineup with a season best 9.90. On beam senior Jennifer Lauer produced another beautiful routine to earn a 9.90 for NU. In the all-around competition, UCLA’s Sam Peszek powered to an impressive 39.625 to capture the title while freshman Grace Williams set the tone for Nebraska with a 39.250.
Nebraska began competition on bars posting a team total of 49.025. DeZiel led the way for the Big Red with her season high-tying 9.90. Jennifer Lauer added a season-best 9.825 for her routine, while Danielle Breen put up a 9.80 as the leadoff performer. Grace Williams chipped in a 9.775 as Hollie Blanske produced a 9.725 to round out the rotation.
UCLA powered to a 49.30 on vault to put the Bruins in the lead after the first rotation, paced by graduate student Jordan Williams’ 9.95. Sacramento State earned a 48.25 on beam, while Bridgeport posted a 48.625 on floor for the first event.
Next NU moved to beam where Lauer set the pace for the second week in a row. The senior tallied a 9.90 for her near-perfect routine to help lead the Huskers to a 48.925. Williams tabbed a 9.80 for her routine as Lambert entered back in the lineup to produce a 9.75. Breen captured a 9.725 to boost the effort. Blanske overcame some minor struggles to earn a 9.7, as DeZiel registered a 9.75 mark.
UCLA pushed through dismount struggles to notch a 49.00 on bars and maintain the lead. Standout bars performer Peng-Peng Lee put up an event-winning 9.95 to lead the way for the Bruins. After two rotations, the Huskers remained in second, while Bridgeport and Sacramento State stayed in third and fourth respectively.
The Big Red made its way to floor for the third rotation as the team soared to a season-best 49.475. Sophomore Ashley Lambert stuck her way to a 9.95 to raise the bar for NU. Blanske marked an impressive 9.90 to follow, while DeZiel, Williams and Moore added identical 9.875s to fuel the explosive floor rotation.
UCLA kept things rolling on beam with a remarkable 49.525 total, led once again by Lee’s 9.975-winning score. The Bruins held onto the lead after three rotations 147.825-147.365. Bridgeport remained in third as Sacramento State continued to hold onto the No. 4 spot.
The Huskers took to the vault in the final rotation of the evening and delivered a 49.225 performance. Senior Desire’ Stephens led the No. 2 vaulting team in the nation by sticking a 9.90 mark. Blanske and Lambert produced a duo of 9.875s to keep things rolling, while Williams and Moore added an important 9.80 and 9.775 respectively. DeZiel struggled slightly on her landing to earn a 9.675.
Despite a series of stumbles on floor, UCLA held onto the lead after picking up a 49.225 on the event. Leading the way was Danusia Francis, who grabbed a 9.95 for her performance. The Huskers concluded the meet with a solid 196.650, but could not overcome the Bruins’ 197.050. Sacramento State finished with a 194.150 score as Bridgeport notched a 192.575.
The Huskers will return home for the 27th annual Masters Classic next weekend, featuring San Jose State and No. 13 Illinois. The meet will take place on Sunday, March 1 at 2 p.m. in the Devaney Center.
