The No. 7 Nebraska women’s gymnastics team delivered an impressive 197.075 to capture a win over the Minnesota Gophers (3-2, 2-1 Big Ten) Saturday night.
Senior Jessie DeZiel and Minnesota’s Lindsay Mable, currently ranked No. 11 overall, went head-to-head for the all-around competition as they were tied after three rotations. DeZiel captured the vault title with a 9.925 and also earned first-place honors on bars for her 9.90 en route to her second-place all-around finish (39.550). Junior Hollie Blanske picked up an impressive 39.375 to earn her a third place finish in the all-around. Senior Jennifer Lauer delivered a solid 9.925 beam routine that would earn her a tie for first-place with Mable.
Nebraska opened the meet on bars posting a team score of 49.125. DeZiel led the way by tying her season high score of a 9.90. Jennie Laeng and Grace Williams recorded identical 9.85’s giving Williams a new career high. Danielle Breen earned a 9.775 as Blanske and J. Lauer rounded out the event with a duo of 9.75’s.
Minnesota started on vault posting a team score of 49.15 to give the Gophers the slim lead after one rotation. Last week’s Big Ten Gymnast of the Week, Mable led the way with a 9.90.
The Big Red moved to vault for the second rotation and produced a vital 49.425 to push the Huskers past the Gophers after two rotations. DeZiel paved the way with a strong 9.925 as Laeng soared to a new season-best 9.90. Blanske and Williams notched a pair of 9.875’s as Stephens and Lambert earned identical 9.85’s.
Minnesota earned a 49.00 on bars to push their team score to a 98.15 after two rotations. Mable and Cierra Tomson fueled the Gophers with a 9.875 and a 9.85, respectively.
NU took the floor for the third rotation and delivered a 49.225 performance. DeZiel and Blanske captured identical 9.875’s to fuel the Huskers with Williams producing a 9.85. Moore earned a 9.825 as Stephens and Lambert notched 9.80’s to conclude the floor rotation.
The Gophers were sparked by another solid performance from Mable as she notched a 9.925 to earn a 49.125 team score on beam. After three rotations, the Huskers kept the lead with a 147.775 over the Gophers’ 147.275.
Nebraska rounded out the meet on the balance beam with several notable routines to earn the Huskers a score of a 49.30. J. Lauer delivered a seamless performance to earn an outstanding season-high 9.925 that tied her for first. Blanske delivered a beautiful 9.875 as DeZiel came in clutch with a 9.85 at the anchor position. Breen and Laeng notched identical 9.825’s to round out the Huskers’ impressive beam performance.
The Gophers finished on floor with a strong 49.400. Mable posted a 9.975 as Tomson earned a 9.90. Minnesota finished with a 196.675, but could not top the Husker’s powerful 197.075.
The Huskers will head to Los Angeles, Calif. next weekend for NU’s final regular-season road competition on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 4 p.m. The quad meet will feature the No. 7 ranked Cornhuskers, No. 13 ranked UCLA, Sacramento State and Bridgeport.
