NU Falls to South Dakota in Extra Innings

Lincoln - The Nebraska softball team opened its fall exhibition season with a 2-1, nine-inning loss to South Dakota in game one of a Sunday doubleheader at Bowlin Stadium.

In a pitcher's duel, the game was scoreless until one out in the top of the seventh inning, when South Dakota's Shelby Keil hit a solo home run to center. Nebraska, which had only two hits through the first six innings, then came up with three hits in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game.

Senior Steph Pasquale lined a one-out single to right field to get the rally started in the bottom of the seventh. Junior Dawna Tyson then won a long at bat with a double to left center that sent sophomore pinch runner Kat Woolman to third base. South Dakota pitched around freshman Kaylan Jablonski to load the bases before freshman Laura Barrow delivered an RBI single to left that scored Woolman with the tying run. On the play, sophomore pinch runner Lotte Sjulin attempted to score from second, but was thrown out by Coyote left fielder Christy Warnock. Nebraska still had a chance to earn the win with runners at second and third with two outs before a pop out sent the game to extra innings.

In the top of the eighth, a sharp single to left and a pair of bloop singles loaded the bases for South Dakota with only one out. Junior right-hander Emily Lockman then struck out Keil on three straight pitches and got out of the inning with a strikeout of Emily Winckler.

Nebraska stranded sophomore MJ Knighten at second base in the bottom of the eighth after Knighten lined a two-out double down the left field line.

The Coyotes threatened again in the top of the ninth when Katie Dinning beat out an infield single to third and advanced to second on a throwing error from Knighten. Another infield single put runners at the corners with one out and South Dakota grabbed a 2-1 lead on an RBI ground out from Allie Daly.

Trailing by one in its final at bat for the second time in the game, Nebraska was unable to rally in the bottom of the ninth, as the Huskers were retired in order.

Junior right-hander Emily Lockman pitched well in a losing effort, allowing just one earned run in 9.0 innings. Lockman scattered 12 hits and struck out six. Ten of the 12 hits she allowed were singles, including three infield singles.

Rachel Cue matched Lockman pitch for pitch for South Dakota. In a complete-game effort of her own, Cue allowed only one run while firing a six-hitter.

Six Huskers had a hit in the win, while Barrow drove in Nebraska's lone run.
