Huskers Headed to Super Six Team Finals

Cleveland, Ohio - The No. 9 Nebraska women’s gymnastics team posted a score of 196.85 Thursday evening to come in second and qualify for its ninth Super Six Finals appearance at the NCAA Championships at the Wolstein Center in Cleveland, Ohio. In making their 20th NCAA Championships appearance, the Huskers improved to 20-9 on the year.

 

Nebraska will advance to team finals Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. (central) to contend for a national title along with Alabama (197.05), Oklahoma (196.775), Michigan (196.70), UCLA (196.50) and Utah (196.20).

 

NU finished behind the Alabama (197.05), and ahead of Utah (196.20), Florida (196.125) Oregon State (196.10) and Kent State (195.00).

 

“We’re very honored,” Head Coach Dan Kendig said. This has been one of our goals all year after finishing seventh at the Championships last year.”

 

Nine different Huskers combined for a total of 11 All-America awards in the second semifinal session session, highlighted by senior Erin Davis tabbing a pair of first-team accolades on vault and floor and sophomore Janelle Giblin earning first-team All-America honors on vault and second-team accolades in the all-around. Giblin was a second-team All-American on bars in her freshman campaign. Freshman Jamie Schleppenbach earned first-team All-America accolades on vault, and senior Maria Scaffidi and freshman Emily Wong both tabbed first-team All-America honors on bars. Senior Maddie Steinauer earned second-team All-America status on beam along with senior Brittnee Habbib and sophomore Brittany Skinner. The award is the second All-America honor for Skinner, who earned first-team accolades on vault in 2010. Junior Lora Evenstad was name a first-team All-American on floor, after earning first-team honors on vault in 2010. First- through fourth-place finishers are named first-team All-Americans on their respective events or the all-around, while fifth- through eighth-place finishers comprise the second team.

 

Davis, will compete on vault and floor in Sunday’s individual event finals, while Giblin and Schleppenbach will compete on vault. Wong and Scaffidi will look to contend for individual crowns on bars, and Evenstad will compete for an NCAA event title on floor.

  

NU opened the competition on vault with one of their best performances of the season. Davis led the way with a stellar mark of 9.95 to tie for first-place. Giblin and Schleppenbach each posted a 9.90 to tie for third, marking a career-best for Giblin. Steinauerand Evenstad both tabbed marks of 9.85, giving NU a total of 49.45 on the event. With Alabama and Kent State both on byes, Nebraska led Utah (49.05), Oregon State (48.95) and Florida (48.125) after the first rotation.

 

After a bye, Nebraska moved on to bars where Scaffidi and Wong both hit marks of 9.90 to tie for first, a career-high-tying score for Wong. Evenstad tallied a 9.875, while Giblin posted a 9.85 and Brittnee Habbib notched a 9.825. Nebraska finished with an event total of 49.35. The Huskers posted a running score of 98.80, putting them in first ahead of Alabama (98.75), Oregon State (98.05), Utah (97.80), Florida (98.575) and Kent State (97.05).

 

The Huskers continued to beam where Steinauer, Habbib and Skinner all received scores of 9.775 to tie for fifth. Wong and Giblin each tabbed a 9.725 to give NU an event score of 48.775. Nebraska posted a running total of 147.575 heading into a bye before floor, while Florida tabbed a running total of 146.825, Oregon State posted a 147.45 and Utah notched a 146.925.

 

Nebraska capped the evening on floor after a bye, where Evenstad and Davis each tallied a 9.90 to tie for third. Steinauer posted a 9.85, while Wong hit a 9.825 and Habbib tabbed a 9.80 as Nebraska closed the day with a 49.275 on floor, a total of 196.85 – its second highest of the season- and a second-place NCAA semifinal finish.

 

“We have four seniors who have really stepped up and took over this team,” Kendig said. They have made a huge difference. There will be six great teams competing tomorrow. We need to go out and start out strong on our first event and do what we need to do.”

Nebraska will compete in tomorrow night’s NCAA Super Six Finals at the Wolstein Center at 3 p.m. (central).
