Huskers Capture Big 12 Championship

Columbia, Mo. – The No. 11 Nebraska women’s gymnastics team posted a score of 196.775 to win its ninth Big 12 Conference team title and 21st Conference title Saturday afternoon at the University of Missouri’s Hearnes Center. The Huskers captured all or a share of three event crowns, highlighted by vault and floor champion Erin Davis and bars champion Maria Scaffidi.

With its second-highest score of the season, Nebraska topped No. 4 Oklahoma (196.50), No. 20 Iowa State (195.15) and Missouri (194.975).

Davis posted a 9.925 to come in first on vault, giving her the second Big 12 vault title of her career. Her score marked the highest vault score at the Big 12 Championships since 2005. She also tallied a 9.90 on floor to tie for first place. Scaffidi notched a 9.90 on bars to take the event title, the first of her career.

The Huskers saw Davishonored with the inaugural Big 12 Event Specialist of the Year Award. In addition, Head Coach Dan Kendig earned Big 12 Coach of the Year accolades.

The top four finishers in each event, including the all-around, were also named to the All-Big 12 Championship Team. Davis tallied the honors on vault and floor. Janelle Giblin and Jamie Schleppenbach bothearned the award on vault. Scaffidi tabbed the honor on bars, along with Lora Evenstad and Brittany Skinner. Evenstad also notched the honor on floor. Emily Wong tabbed accolades on beam and Maddie Steinauer took home the award on floor.

Nebraska opened the meet on bars, where Scaffidi led the way with a score of 9.90 to earn the first Big 12 title of her career. Evenstadand Skinnerfollowed her lead, both posting marks of 9.85. Wongnotched a 9.825, while Brittnee Habbib tallied a 9.775. Nebraska capped the event with a total of 49.20, ahead of Oklahoma (49.10), Missouri (48.75) and Iowa State (48.425).

NU then moved on to beam and was led by Wong as she tallied a career-high 9.90. Steinauer tabbed a 9.875, and Habbib scored a 9.825. Skinner hit a 9.75, while Schleppenbachrounded out the rotation with a 9.70. Nebraska posted an event total of 49.00. The Huskers headed into the third rotation with a running total of 98.225 and leading the Sooners (98.15), Missouri (97.50) and Iowa State (97.25).

The Huskers continued to the third rotation on floor, where Davis tallied a career-high-tying 9.90 to earn a share of the Big 12 event crown. Evenstad posted a 9.875, while Steinauer hit a 9.85. Wong notched a 9.825 and Giblinreceived a mark of 9.80. NU totaled a 49.20 on the event, and notched a running score of 147.475. The Huskers held the lead over Oklahoma (147.05), Missouri (146.25) and Iowa State (146.125) heading into the final rotation.

Nebraska capped the evening on vault, as Davis tallied her second Big 12 title of the afternoon with a 9.925 on the event. Giblin and Schleppenbach both hit scores of 9.85, while Evenstad and Steinauer tallied marks of 9.825. Nebraska posted an event total of 49.275. NU totaled a 196.775 on the day, claiming their ninth Big 12 Conference title in school history. Oklahoma came in second (196.50), Iowa State took third (195.15) and Missouri placed fourth (194.975).

Nebraska, which has won a total of 21 conference titles in school history, will await its fate with the announcement of the NCAA Regional fields on Monday, March 21.
