Ann Arbor, Mich. - Senior Erin Davis and junior Lora Evenstad led the ninth-ranked Nebraska women's gymnastics team with career performances against No. 8 Michigan and No. 2 Stanford Sunday afternoon at Crisler Arena. NU posted a score of 195.40 to come in third at the meet, trailing first-place Stanford (196.80) and second-place Michigan (196.50). The Huskers are now 4-6 (3-1 Big 12) on the year.
Davis, who ranks second on vault nationally, hit a season-high 9.95 on the event to come in second. Michigan's Kylee Botterman, who recorded a perfect 10.0 at the meet, took the event crown. Davis has scored a 9.925 or higher on vault five different times this season.
Evenstad notched a career-high 9.925 on bars, giving her a share of the event crown with Michigan's Trish Wilson. Previously, Evenstad had recorded a career-best score of 9.875 on the event. She now has five event titles on the season, four on floor and one on bars. She also tied her career-high score on vault, tallying a 9.90 for the third time of her career. She tied for third in the event.
Nebraska opened the meet with the best bars performance of the season. Evenstad led the way, posting a career-high 9.925 and tying for first in the meet. Janelle Giblin and Brittany Skinner each tabbed a career-best mark of 9.875. Giblin had previously hit the same score three other times. Rounding out the rotation, Brittnee Habbib and Maria Scaffidi each hit a season high of 9.85. NU totaled a season-high 48.375.
"We started out great," Head Coach Dan Kendig said. "That was as good a bars performance as we've had since I don't know when. I don't remember the last time we competed that well on bars."
The Huskers moved to beam where Maddie Steinauer kicked the event off with a 9.775. Habbib added a 9.725, while Emily Wong posted a score of 9.70. Scaffidi and Skinner received a 9.30 and 9.225, respectively. Nebraska totaled a 47.725 on the event, putting them in third place at the halfway point of the meet, behind Michigan (98.75) and Stanford (98.20).
NU continued to floor where Scaffidi posted a 9.825 and Davis tallied a 9.80. Wong and Steinauer each added a 9.775 and Evenstad contributed a 9.75. The Huskers notched a 48.925 on the event, giving them a running total of 146.025 to Stanford's 147.475 and Michigan's 147.60.
Nebraska capped the day on vault where Davis provided another highlight performance, notching a season-high 9.95 on the event. She came in second in the event standings, behind a perfect 10.0 from Michigan's Kylee Botterman. Evenstad tied her career high score of 9.90 for the third time, while Giblin matched her career high of 9.875. Steainuer added a 9.85 to tie her season-high mark. Posting the second-highest vault total of the season, Nebraska tallied a 49.375 on the event. The Huskers closed the afternoon in third place (195.40), while Stanford took first (196.80) and Michigan came in second (196.50).
"We're there we're knocking on the door of some things," Kendigsaid. "We have to get consistent and pick up the pace; quit worrying and just do it."
The Huskers hit the road again next weekend as they meet Denver on Saturday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. in Denver, Colo. Nebraska's next home meet is on Sunday, Feb. 27 at 2 p.m., when Bowling Green, Iowa and Kentucky come to town for the Masters Classic.
