Columbia, Mo. – The 10th-ranked Nebraska women’s gymnastics team posted a season-best score to top Missouri 196.075-195.40 Friday night at the Hearnes Center. NU posted a score of 49.00 or better on vault, bars and floor.
“We had a great start to this meet,” Head Coach Dan Kendig said. “We started on bars and went six for six and over 49 for the first time this year. That was our goal today. We went to vault and rocked and rolled, we were very good.”
The Huskers posted one of their best performances on the season, as 16 career or season-high marks were hit. As a team, Nebraska notched season-high totals on vault, bars and floor.
NU earned or tied for top honors on vault (Erin Davis, 9.925), beam (Maddie Steinauer, 9.90) and floor (Lora Evenstad, 9.90). Janelle Giblin came in second in the all-around, tying her career-best of 39.125.
Nebraska opened the meet on bars, where Emily Wong tied her career high mark of 9.85 on the event to take second on the event. Following her lead was Janelle Giblin, Brittnee Habbib and Brittany Skinner who all hit a 9.825 and tied for third. The score tied Habbib’s and Skinner’s season highs. Evenstadadded a 9.80 of her own as NU ended the first rotation with a season-high 49.125, ahead of Missouri’s vault total of 49.05.
The Huskers moved to vault, as Davisled the team, matching her season-best mark of 9.925 for the third time as a senior. She also earned the event title for the third time this season on vault. Skinner came in second on the event as she posted a career-high-tying 9.90 and Giblin added a career-high 9.875 to tie for third. Steinauer notched a season-high 9.85, while Jamie Schleppenbach posted a 9.85 as well. Nebraska totaled a season-high event score of 49.40, leading MU 98.525-97.225 at the halfway point of the meet.
NU headed to floor with Evenstad earning a share of the floor crown and tying her season-high 9.90, while Davis posting a season-high 9.85. Steinauer and Scaffidi each added a 9.825 a piece, and Wong tied her season high mark of 9.80. Nebraska finished with another season-best event score of 49.20 and extended the lead over Missouri 147.725-146.15.
Nebraska capped the evening on beam where Steinauer took the event crown, notching a career-high 9.90. Habbib hit a 9.75, while Giblin and Skinner each totaled a 9.70, a career high for Giblin and season high for Skinner. Maria Scaffidi added a 9.30, while NU hit a beam total of 48.35. Nebraska ended the night topping the Tigers, 196.075-195.40.
We wanted to average over a 196 this weekend and this is part of it,” Kendig said. “I feel like it’s going to be a dog fight on Sunday. We’re going to need to be our best. Oklahoma is a great team, it’s a great rivalry and I’m excited for it.”
The Huskers return home on Sunday to welcome No. 5 Oklahoma to the Devaney Center at 2 p.m.
