Ames, Iowa - The 11th-ranked Nebraska women's gymnastics team posted a season-high score of 195.45 Friday night to top No. 23 Iowa State (194.725) at Hilton Coliseum. NU posted a score of 49.00 or better on vault and received or tied for top honors on vault, bars, beam and floor.
"We did a good job tonight, we hit 21 out of 24 routines, we didn't have to count a fall," Head Coach Dan Kendig said. "The biggest thing, the story of the night was Janelle GIbin on floor, she hadn't done floor all year, she was our first all-arounder of the year, that was pretty cool. She won the meet for us tonight. Janelle went 9.75 on floor, she increased our team score by .75, we wouldn't have won without it."
Sophomore Janelle Giblin debuted for Nebraska as an all-arounder in the meet, totaling a score of 39.025. It was the first all-around performance of her career and she was also the first all-arounder to compete for the Huskers this season. Giblin posted a career-high score of 9.825 on vault for second in the event. She also hit career-highs of 9.675 and 9.75 on beam and floor, respectively.
We got over a 49 on vault, we're even better than that," Kendig said. "We'll be happy if we can get Erin Davis back next week, that will really help our vault. Floor will get better and better. It's a matter of putting it all together. We'll probably get Erin back there, maybe even Maria (Scaffidi). There will be some people to choose from on floor."
The Huskers swept top honors on vault as freshman Jamie Schleppenbach hit a 9.875 for first, junior Lora Evenstad hit a 9.85 for second and Giblin posted a 9.825 for third-place. NU took home the top spot on bars with sophomore Brittany Skinner's top mark of 9.825.
Nebraska opened the meet on bars, where Skinner took first in the event as she led the way with a season-high score of 9.825. Her first-place standing marked the first time she took an event crown in her sophomore year. Giblin added a 9.775, while Brittnee Habbib and Evenstad each posted a 9.75. Maria Scaffidi received a mark of 9.625 as NU finished with an event score of 48.725, ahead Iowa State's first-rotation vault total of 48.375.
The Huskers moved to vault as all five Huskers posted scores that were either season or career high marks, giving Nebraska its first score of 49.00 or better on the season. NU capped the evening on beam with Steinauer, Wong and Habbib all posting scores of 9.825 to tie for first-place in the event. The mark was a career high for Steinauer and Wong and a season high for Habbib. Giblin added a career-high mark of 9.675 and Scaffidi posted a season-high 9.55. NU finished with a season high event score of 48.70 and a final team total of 195.45 to top Iowa State, which totaled a 194.725 on the night.
"All in all, we're making progress this is what it's all about," Kendig said. "I was hoping for a little more today, it shows us we still have a lot of work to do."
The Huskers return home next weekend to welcome Utah to the Devaney Center on Saturday at 7 p.m. for Pepsi Pack the House. All Husker fans will receive $1 24 oz Pepsi products and $1 admission to the meet.
