The Nebraska bowling team will be competing in their first tournament of the new-year in Cabot, Arkansas at the Mid-Winter Classic from Jan 14-16. The Huskers finished their fall season on a high note after winning both the Capital City Collegiate Classic and the Crusader Classic.
The Huskers will be competing in a 15-team field including Nebraska, Alabama A&M, Alabama State, Arkansas State, Central Missouri, Delaware State, Jackson State, Louisiana Tech, Maryland Eastern Shore, Prairie View A&M, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin State, Texas Southern, Vanderbilt, and Valparaiso.
The layout of the tournament consists of 6 – total 4 game matches on Friday, 6 team-games on Saturday and finals on Sunday determined by field size consisting of 4 out of 7 baker games. The Huskers are sending eight bowlers to the tournament: Valerie Calberry, Kayla Johnson, Jasmine Laugerman, Kristina Mickelson, Katie Ann Sopp, Kayla Stram, Danielle van der Meer and Shalima Zalsha
Following the Mid-Winter Classic, the Husker bowlers will enjoy four days off before their lone home tournament of the season at the Big Red Invite, hosted at Sun Valley Lanes. The event runs from Jan. 20-22 and is free to all UNL students with a valid ID. The Invite is the second regular season tournament hosted by the Cornhuskers in Lincoln. Play begins at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan 14.
Review: Capital City Collegiate Classic
The Nebraska bowling team finished in first-place at the Capital City Collegiate Classic held at the campus of Jackson State University this weekend. The Huskers finished with 9,023 pins, nearly 600 pins ahead of second-place Arkansas State University who tallied 8,452. Alabama A&M finished in third-place with a pinfall of 8,034.
Valerie Calberry led the way for the Huskers, finishing in first-place on the all-tournament team. She averaged 209 on the tournament. Other Huskers on the all-tournament team include Kristi Mickelson, who finished in second-place with an average of 208. Kayla Johnson finished fourth on the all-tournament team with a tournament average of 199.
"The first semester of competition is over," Nebraska Head Coach Bill Straub said. "The team is looking forward to preparing for the second semester."
Nebraska will now enjoy the holidays before returning to competition Jan. 14-16 at the Mid-Winter Classic in Jonesboro, Ark.
