Nebraska Looks to Continue Success at Capital City Collegiate Classic

The Nebraska bowling team continues their regular season with the Capital City Collegiate Classic, hosted by Jackson State University. The three-day Classic is scheduled to begin Friday, Dec. 3 at 9 a.m. and run through Sunday afternoon.

The 11-team field includes Alabama A&M University, Alabama State University, Arkansas State University, Grambling, Louisiana Tech University, Minnesota University, Mississippi Valley State, University of Nebraska, Sam Houston University, Stephen F. Austin University, and Texas Southern.

Nebraska is sending eight bowlers to take part in the Classic. Included on the traveling squad are: Valerie Calberry, Kayla Johnson,Jasmine Laugerman, Kristina Mickelson, Katie Ann Sopp, Kayla Stram, Danielle van der Meer, and Shalima Zalsha

Nebraska is coming off of a first-place finish at the Crusader Classic at Valparaiso, Ind. Nebraska defeated Minnesota-Mankato in the finals, 4-2, to earn the tournament's crown.

Following the Capital City Collegiate Classic, the Huskers will enjoy the holiday break with a month off of competition. The Huskers return to action Jan. 14-16 at the Mid-Winter Classic at Jonesboro, Ark.

Review: Nebraska Wins Crusader Classic

Nebraska defeated Minnesota State-Mankato in the final match 4-2 to win the Crusader Classic Sunday morning in Merrillville, Ind.

The Huskers opened their 2010-11 campaign with a tournament title by conquering a six-team field that included, Elmhurst, UW-Whitewater, Arkansas State, Adrian, Minnesota State-Mankato and the hosts from Valparaiso.

The Huskers were led by junior Valerie Calberry, who produced a solid 191 average on the tournament. Calberry also notched Nebraska's high game in the three-day tournament with a 240-pin effort.

The Huskers will take a three-week break from competition before returning to the lanes at the Capital City Collegiate Classic in Brandon, Miss., on Dec. 3.
