Fort Worth, Texas - The University of Nebraska rifle team traveled to Fort Worth this weekend to challenge Kentucky and TCU on the range. Unfortunately, the team came away with two defeats, falling 4,672-4,579 to Kentucky and 4,690-4,602 to TCU. The Huskers fall to 2-3 on the season with the losses.
"For our first away matches, we did okay," Head Coach Morgan Hicks said. "We still have a ways to go, but we are making it slowly."
The Huskers had a tough day against Kentucky on Saturday. Janine Dutton was Nebraska's top shooter on the day with a combined score of 1,149. Her score of 587 in air rifle was good for fourth place overall at the meet. Ryann McGough shot 568 in smallbore to lead the Huskers in that discipline.
"The girls went into the second match against TCU with a renewed spirit and did perform a lot better," Hicks said.
The Huskers faced defending national champion TCU on Sunday. McGough led the Huskers in scoring against the Horned Frogs, posting a combined score of 1,150. She also posted the top smallbore score of the day for Nebraska with a 570. Dutton had the top air rifle score of the day, shooting an outstanding mark of 595 to lead both the Huskers and the meet.
"I was very proud of Janine on the second day," Hicks said. "She had a rough smallbore match and had to turn around right after and shoot air rifle. She didn't let her previous score affect her and she shot a personal best of a 595."
Nebraska will have two weeks to prepare for their final two matches of the fall season. They will travel to Morgantown, W.Va. to challenge North Carolina State and West Virginia on Nov. 20 and 21. Both matches will start at 7 a.m. central time.
