Lincoln - The Nebraska rifle team opened its season on Friday with a win over Memphis. The Huskers defeated the Tigers 4,601-4,574 at the NU Rifle Range.
"For our first match, we did OK," Nebraska Coach Morgan Hicks said. "I am by no means happy with our score, but I am glad our first one is out of the way."
Janine Dutton led the way for the Huskers, posting a combined score of 1,157. Dutton's day included the top air rifle score of the competition with a 588.
"Janine Dutton had a great day in air rifle," Hicks said. " I was pleased to see her shoot that score in a match situation. I can't wait to see how this year pans out for her."
Ryann McGough posted the second-highest score for NU at 1,154. Katie Kostal led NU in smallbore with a score of 579, which was good for second.
"I was very pleased with how Katie Kostal shot in smallbore today," Hicks said. "She has been working hard, and the results she had showed as she led the team.
"Overall, I thought the team came together and helped each other go through this first match. Even though we had a rough first match score, we will show great improvement as the season progresses."
The Huskers will take on Army this Sunday at the NU Rifle Range. The match is set to start at 8 a.m.
