Sock Advances to Main Draw at Central Region Championships

Norman, Okla.---The Nebraska men's tennis team kicked off play at the 2010 UTSA/ITA Central Region Championships on Thursday, Oct. 21, with six players in the qualifying bracket. Freshman Eric Sock (NU) led the Huskers winning both of his matches and advancing to the main draw which begins in Norman, Okla., on Friday, Oct. 22. The Huskers won a total of eight singles matches on the day.

After receiving a bye in the first round of the Group C bracket, Sock got his day started by taking down Big Ten-foe Alex Buceta (Iowa) 7-6, 6-1, in the second round. With the win, Sock needed to defeat Sean O'Grady (Drake) to advance to the main draw, which he did by the score of 7-6 (2), 6-2.

Two other Huskers were able to advance to the finals of their respective brackets, including freshman Tom Blackwell (NU). In his first match as a Husker, Blackwell took down Garret Dunn (Iowa) 7-6, 6-4, before dropping his finals match to Brandon Florez (SIU) in a tight 3-6, 6-4, 10-8, battle. The other Husker to advance to the final was Drew Freeman (NU), who couldn't get past Falk Debeenhouwer (SIU) falling in straight sets 6-2, 7-5.

Andre Stenger, Christopher Aumueller, Calin Paar, Benedikt Lindheim and Sock will all begin play in the main draw on Friday at 8 a.m. First and second round singles and doubles matches will be played on Friday. Main draw brackets will be released Thursday night.
