Lincoln, Neb. - The Nebraska Rifle Team capped its weekend with a 4,619-4,605 victory against Army at the NU Rifle Range. This boosted the NU's record to 2-0 on the season. On hand cheering for the Huskers were the Nebraska Women's Gymnastics and Bowling teams.
"I want to thank the entire Women's Gymnastics and Bowling teams for coming out and supporting us today," said Nebraska Coach Morgan Hicks. "It was great to see the extra support."
Janine Dutton shot the highest combined score for the Huskers with 1,159. She also shot NU's top air rifle score of 584. Katie Kostal shot Nebraska's second-highest combined score with 1,153.
Freshman Sunny Russell had an impressive day in smallbore, firing a score of 582. In addition to being a new personal best, she led the Huskers and posted the top score of the meet in the discipline.
"Sunny Russell had an amazing day in smallbore," said Hicks. "It is great to see a high score come out of her so early. I expect her to continue this trend as she works hard to hit her next goal."
The Huskers improved their shooting in smallbore as a team, posting a combined score of 2,308-over 30 points higher than their score against Memphis on Friday.
"Today was much better than Friday," said Hicks. "I felt we came together as a team and were able to work through the nerves. I expect us to continue to grow as a team and see score improvements at every match."
The Huskers will have two weeks to prepare before their next competition. They face Air Force on Oct. 23 at the NU Rifle Range. The match will start at 8 a.m.
