Lubbock, Texas ? Epley Bullock’s school-record jump of 6-2 3/4 in the high jump highlighted the Husker women’s narrow 99-98 win, while the NU men’s squad escaped Texas by a score of 104-98.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>
After opening the 2010 outdoor season with a school-record tying jump of 6-2 1/4 at the Jim Click Shootout in Tucson, Ariz., Bullock took over the record on Saturday night. Bullock started by passing at the first two heights and then posted three straight first-attempt clearances at 5-7, 5-8 3/4 and 5-10. She was then the only jumper left competing, which made her feat that much more impressive, as she had no competition left to push her. After clearing 6-0 on her second attempt, the Allen, Texas, native took the school record one-half inch higher with her third-attempt make at 6-2 3/4. Bullock ended the meet with three attempts at 6-3 1/4, but was unable to clear.
In the team race, the women’s match-up came down to the Huskers’ dominance in the field against the Red Raiders’ speed on the track. The Huskers took first and second place in six of the eight field events, including a sweep of the horizontal jumps by senior Leandra McGruder. Morgan Wilken and Victoria Zimmerman also contributed strong performances in victory, as Wilken tossed a personal best of 165-7 in the discus and Zimmerman posted a personal best in the hammer throw for the second straight week with a throw of 189-11.
While the Red Raiders took first and second in six events on the track, Nebraska didn’t go out without a fight, as they won the 3,000-meter steeplechase, 800 meters and finished 1-2 in the 100-meter hurdles, where Arna Erega ran a personal best of 13.44.
The men’s competition was much more balanced on the track and in the field, as the two teams split first and second place in seven events, the Huskers took the top-two spots in six events, Texas Tech took the top two spot in four events and the two teams split the relays. Overall the Huskers won nine events on the day.
Lehann Fourie shined with a wind-aided personal best of 13.41 in the 110-meter hurdles, the second-best wind-aided time in school history. The men’s 4x400-meter relay of Adam Dailey, Fourie, Eric Lund and Tommy Brinn also added a season-best time of 3:08.40 in the 4x400-meter relay.
The Huskers will be back in Lincoln next weekend to wrap up of the 2010 regular season with the Nebraska Open. A one-day meet, the women’s hammer throw and men’s javelin will be the first event of the day at 2 p.m., while the first track event will start at 3 p.m. with the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase.
