Suckstorf Slings Big Throw at Mt. SAC Relays

Walnut, Calif. ? While the majority of the Nebraska track and field team was in competition at the Kansas Relays in Lawrence, Kan., the Huskers also had a group of athletes competing late into Friday night at the Mt. SAC Relays at Hilmer Lodge Stadium.

The Huskers started the day by making their presence known in the men’s hammer throw, where Brett Suckstorf and Eric Petersen finished first and second, respectively, with each posting a PR. After Petersen got the best of Suckstorf at last weekend’s Nebraska Invitational in Lincoln, Suckstorf responded by breaking his previous best of 201-9 with a toss of 203-5, while Petersen got ever closer to the 200-foot barrier with a throw of 199-1.

Moving to the track, NU’s 800-meter runners produced strong races on both the men’s and women’s sides. Blaire Dinsdale opened for the group by finishing 11th out of 52 runners with a season-best time of 2:10.85. Blaise Rewaka and Tommy Brinn followed with a pair of top-10 finishes in the 83-athlete men’s field. Rewaka clocked a time of 1:51.36 to finish sixth, while Brinn crossed the line two-tenths of a second later in eighth at 1:51.56.

Ashley Miller and Jen Pancoast wrapped up the night for the Huskers, with each posting a personal best in their race. First, Miller dropped over six seconds off her previous best of 4:28.83 in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:22.01, the seventh-fastest performance in NU history. Pancoast, who didn’t get onto the track until 10:30 p.m. local time, followed in the ninth-best 5,000 meter performance in school history with a time of 16:37.88, bettering previous best of 16:59.66.

The Husker high jumpers will return to Hilmer Lodge Stadium today for competition, while NU’s distance and middle distance squads will compete at the Beach Invitational, hosted by Long Beach State in Norwalk, Calif., at Cerritos College.
