Lincoln ? The Nebraska track and field team wrapped up its annual Red vs. White Intrasquad meet on Friday night at the Devaney Center Indoor Track, after three events were competed on Thursday night. With the White Team riding a two-year winning streak after winning the past two meets by a total of six points, the Red Team bounced back with a commanding 114.5-94.5 win, as the two teams combined to break two meet records.
The men’s long jumpers highlighted the meet as the top three finishers all broke the previous meet record of 24-1 1/2, set by former national champion Arturs Abolins in 2006. True freshman Bobby Carter, a native of Lee’s Summit, Mo., led the way with a leap of 25-5 1/4, followed by 2009 indoor long jump All-American Chris Phipps at 25-3 1/2 and reigning indoor long jump national champion Nicholas Gordon in third at 25-2 3/4.
After setting the meet record with a time of 7.83 in the 60-meter hurdles last year, Lehann Fourie improved the time by one-hundredth of a second with a winning time of 7.82 for the white team.
Fans in attendance were also treated to quite a show by former Husker high jump national champion and 2008 Olympian Dusty Jonas, as he joined the men’s high jump field. An eight-time All-American while at NU, Jonas soared to a clearance at the 7-5 bar, a jump that would have broken his own intrasquad meet record of 7-3 if he was still a collegiate jumper.
The meet also offered the opportunity for young Husker fans to get out onto the same track that the Huskers run on, as the youngsters were able to run in both the Little Husker 60- and 200-meter dashes.
The Huskers will now continue to prepare for the start of the 2010 track and field season, as they are set to open at home on Friday, Jan. 15 at 4 p.m. with the two-day Holiday Inn Invitational. Fans interested in tickets should log on to Huskers.com or call the Nebraska Athletic Ticket Office at 1-800-8-BIGRED.
