Huskers Ready for 2009 Season

Lincoln ? Nebraska cross country Head Coach Jay Dirksen has released the 2009 Nebraska cross country captains, as the Huskers prepare for the upcoming season.  The women will be captained by two senior runners in Ari Goldstein and Rachel Carrizales, while the men will be led sophomore David Adams.

 

A three-time captain, Goldstein returns in 2009 for her second chance at her senior season, as she was forced to redshirt in 2008 after suffering mononucleosis in the fall. Goldstein will be a welcome addition to a women’s team that will be replacing three departed seniors that helped the Huskers make a trip to the 2008 NCAA Championships. She, along with teammate Lara Crofford, will look to become the first Husker athletes during the Big 12 era to earn three All-Big 12 honors. Goldstein was the first Husker in school history to earn two All-Big 12 honors in 2006 and 2007, before Crofford also achieved the feat in 2007 and 2008.

 

After being honored as the team’s Most Improved Runner on the women’s side in 2007, Carrizales took another big step forward in 2008 as she earned the first All-Big 12 and All-Midwest Region honors of her career. A two-time NCAA qualifier in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Carrizales was a top runner for the Huskers all season in 2008, finishing as the team’s No. 2 runner at six of her seven races.

 

A 2009 NCAA qualifier in the steeplechase, Adams emerged as a leader for the Huskers in 2008 after redshirting his first year in 2007. He led the Huskers in six of his seven meets, earning him the team's Most Valuable Runner honor on the men's side. Adams led the men to three team titles in 2008, including the Creighton/UNO Classic, Woody Greeno/Nebraska Invitational and South Dakota State Classic.

 

The Huskers are set to kick off the 2009 season on Saturday, Sept. 5, in Omaha, Neb., at the Creighton/UNO Classic, hosted at the Chili Greens Golf Course. The Husker men will look to defend their team title. After winning three straight titles from 2005-07, the Husker women will try to recapture the meet crown following a second-place finish last season. However, the Huskers did come home with the women’s individual crown, as Jen Webers won her first collegiate meet.
