Husker Throwers Excel at WSC Wildcat Open

Wayne, Neb. ? With the cancellation of the Nebraska Open on Sunday, April 26, due to thunderstorms, the Nebraska men’s and women’s throws squads made the trip to the campus of Wayne State College in Wayne, Neb., on Tuesday for the WSC Wildcat Open. The Huskers took advantage of rare mid-week meet, as they produced four regional-qualifying throws.

Brett Suckstorf, who transferred from Wayne State prior to the 2009 season, excelled in his return to Bob Cunningham Field as he posted a personal-best throw of 191-1 in the men’s hammer throw. The NCAA regional-qualifying toss topped his previous best of 186-6 and ranks the Pierce, Neb., native fourth on the Big 12 performance list. Teammate Eric Petersen finished runner-up, posting a regional-qualifying throw of 186-6.

Trey Jordan took top honors in the men’s shot put with a regional-qualifying toss of 57-4 1/4. However, the throw did not top Jordan’s personal- and season-best throw of 60-0 1/4, the No. 2 mark in the Big 12 this season.

Redshirt freshman Tyler Hitchler ended the meet for the Huskers with the squad’s third event title, winning the discus with a personal-best throw of 176-10. The throw improves Hitchler’s previous regional mark of 170-10 and moves him from No. 6 in the Big 12 to No. 4.

The Husker throwers will now prepare for this weekend’s Nebraska Quad. A team scored meet, the Nebraska Quad will see the Huskers due battle with Kansas State, Wichita State and Northern Iowa. The meet will get started on Saturday, May 2, at Noon with the women’s hammer throw and men’s javelin. Action on the track is set for 1 p.m. with the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase. Admission is free to all, check Huskers.com for more information.
