Huskers Fall to San Diego State 4-3

San Diego, Calif.- The No. 58 Nebraska women’s tennis team dropped to 10-1 after falling to No. 25 San Diego State 4-3 at the Aztec Tennis Center in San Diego on Tuesday, March 17. The Huskers battled hard, but could not overcome the efforts of the Aztecs.

“Today’s match was what college tennis is all about,” Assistant Coach Hayden Perez said. “The team played great, and it was fun to be a part of such a battle by both teams. San Diego State has a great program and they were able to hold us off in the end.”

In doubles, Jana Albers and Madeleine Geibert (NU) defeated Holly Bagshaw and Julia Trunk (SDSU), 8-5 at the No. 1 spot, while No. 3 Esther Cadua and Emma Cioffi (SDSU) claimed the first win of the day for San Diego State by taking down Jennifer Holmberg and Mary Weatherholt (NU) 8-4. The Aztecs claimed the doubles point as Roxanne and Sierra Ellison (SDSU) topped Wiveca Swarting and Maria Ring (NU) in second doubles 8-6.

In singles action, Geibert (NU) defeated Trunk (SDSU), 6-0, 7-6 (4). At the No. 2 spot, Weatherholt (NU) outpaced her opponent as she topped Bagsaw (SDSU) 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 and Albers (NU) pulled off the win over Cioffi (SDSU) in third singles, 6-3, 1-6, 6-2. Swarting (NU) was defeated by Cadua (SDSU) 7-5, 6-4, and Olivia Colman (SDSU) topped Ashley Finnegan (NU) at the No. 5 spot, 1-6, 6-1, 6-2. NU also faced a loss at the No. 6 spot, as Holmberg (NU) fell to Ellison (SDSU) 6-4,5-7, 7-6 (3).

The Huskers return to action on Saturday, March 21, when they face Baylor in Waco, Texas. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
