Maria Ring Season 2006-07

2008-09: Senior

Maria Ring was primarily a doubles player in her senior season, playing with five different partners to notch a record of 14-11 overall, including a 10-10 mark in the spring. Ring was unbeaten when paired with fellow senior Ashley Finnegan, going 2-0 at the No. 3 position. She also played well with freshman Mary Weatherholt, finishing with an overall record of 4-1 and a 1-0 mark in Big 12 play.

 

Ring saw limited action in singles play, going 2-2 in just four matches in the fall.

 

2007-08: Junior

Ring made big contributions to the Husker team in 2007-08, primarily on the doubles court. Ring played in every match for Nebraska at the No. 2 doubles spot, mostly with Wiveca Swarting. Ring and Swarting went 13-6 during the season, including 10 straight victories to open the year. The pair went 3-6 in conference play.

 

Ring and Swarting had an impressive six-match streak toward the beginning of the season, winning three of six matches by 8-0 margins, one by an 8-1 margin and two more by 8-2 margins. Over the course of those six matches in non-conference play, Ring and Swarting outscored their opponents 48-5.

 

Ring competed for a spot in the singles rotation during the year. She played six matches at the No. 6 spot, where she went 2-4, and two matches at the No. 5 spot, where she went 0-2. Ring struggled in Big 12 play, finishing the league season with an 0-6 conference record.

 

Ring’s 16 combined victories on the season were good for sixth on the team, and gave her 46 career combined victories at Nebraska after winning 30 as a sophomore in 2006-07.

 

2006-07: Sophomore

Ring was one of three Huskers on the 2006-07 squad with experience at the Division I level, as she had played at Washington State the previous year.

 

Ring played every match at the No. 4 singles position, where she struggled to find consistency. Ring started out the season with an 8-5 record, including a four-match win streak. However, she struggled toward the end of the season, losing her last seven completed matches and winding up with an 8-12 record. Ring went three sets in seven of her 20 matches, the most of any Husker on the team in 2006-07. She went 4-3 in those matches.

 

Ring excelled in doubles play on the year, compiling a 13-8 record between the Nos. 1 and 2 slots. She teamed with Imke Reimers at the No. 1 slot in the first five matches of the season, going 3-2, before joining Wiveca Swarting at the No. 2 position and earning a 10-6 record. At one point in the season, Ring and Swarting won six straight doubles matches, and eight of nine overall.

 

2005-06: Washington State

Ring started her college career at Washington State where she played one season for former Husker great Lisa Hart. While with the Cougars, Ring saw most of her success on the doubles court, where her talents were instantly recognized. She excelled in tandem play and earned a spot at the No. 1 slot in all but one match during the spring.

 

Ring posted a 12-11 overall doubles record, including five wins in her first six doubles matches. She also had five matches (1-4 record) against nationally ranked opponents. Ring gained valuable experience as four of five ranked tandems were listed in the top 20, including the No. 2 duo of Suzi Babos and Zsuzsanna Fodor of California. Ring’s one victory over a ranked squad came in an upset of No. 59 Kady Pooler and Roxanne Clarke, 8-7.

 

Before Nebraska

Before playing a season at Washington State, Ring had a place in the top 15 standings in Sweden’s national rankings, and also was ranked in the top 500 in the ITF’s rankings. She played in three ITF doubles finals and took the Sweden doubles championship in 2004.

 

Personal

Maria Ring was born Sept. 15, 1986 in Linghem, Sweden. She is the daughter of Stefan and Christin Ring and has one brother, Andreas, 17. Maria is majoring in business administration.
