Huskers Fall to No. 7 UCLA in Regular-Season Finale

Los Angeles, Calif. – The No. 12 Nebraska women’s gymnastics team posted a score of 195.85 to No. 7 UCLA’s 196.625 to close the regular season at Pauley Pavilion. The Huskers, who fell to 11-4 on the year, took top honors on bars and beam. NU last met UCLA on Feb. 22 as they upset the Bruins at the Masters Classic in Lincoln.

“It’s frustrating because we’re better than this,” Head Coach Dan Kendig said. “I’m more disappointed for the girl’s sake, because they work hard. We started great out on bars, and Lora (Evenstad) started us off great. We hit six bar routines. We’re doing the right things, but we still have a lot of work to do.”

Nebraska opened the meet on bars, where Brittney Williams led the way with a career-high-tying 9.90 to tie for first with UCLA’s Vanessa Zamarripa. Lora Evenstad hit a season-high 9.875 as she tied for third. Kathryn Howard posted a 9.825, and Kylie Stone and Brittnee Habbib bothadded a 9.85 each. Nebraska ended the first rotation with an event score of 49.30, behind UCLA’s first rotation-mark of 49.425.

NU continued on to vault where Kristin Fyffe kicked the Huskers off with a season-high 9.825, and Tricia Woo posted a 9.90 for second in the event. Erin Davis hit a 9.85, and Evenstad continued her day with a 9.775. Stone hit a 9.825 as NU ended the second rotation with an event score of 49.175, giving them a total of 98.475 to the Bruins’ 98.675.

The Huskers moved on to floor with Woo posting a career-high-tying 9.925 to tie for second. Davis and Nathe both received a 9.775, and Evenstad and Stone each hit a 9.875. NU headed into the final rotation with an event score of 49.225, giving them the lead with a total of 147.70 to UCLA’s 147.05.

Nebraska capped the day on beam, with Woo hitting a 9.925 for first in the event. Nathe posted a season-high-tying 9.80, and Fyffe added a 9.75.The Huskers were forced to count two falls with Habbib’s 9.35 and Stone’s 9.325, but tallied an event score of 48.15. Nebraska finished the meet falling to the Bruins 196.625-195.85.

“We have hit eight events from here since Arizona State,” Kendig said. “It’s what we’re going to do to make four events happen next week. It’s imperative that we have a great meet next week for seeding and regionals.

Nebraska opens the post-season with the Big 12 Championships at Iowa State on Saturday, March 21. Competition is set to begin at 2 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum.
