Lincoln- The No. 12 Nebraska women’s gymnastics team posted a score of 196.175 for a victory over No. 7 Oklahoma (196.00) Sunday at the Devaney Center. On a day honoring Nebraska faculty and staff, NU saw team scores above the 49-mark on vault, beam, and floor, and the Huskers improved to 4-1 on the season in front of a crowd of 1,227.
“It was a great win,” Head Coach Dan Kendig said. “It is encouraging and great to see that the things we are doing in practice come to fruition. They’re doing well in competition based on what we’re preparing for in practice. It makes going to the gym that much easier, but by no means are we out of the woods. We still have an enormous amount of work to do.”
The Huskers opened the meet on vault, where Kristin Fyffe, Lora Evenstad and Erin Davis started the day with scores of 9.80. The score marked a season-high for Fyffe. Tricia Woo and Kylie Stone continued with a 9.85 each to tie for second. Kassandra Nathe rounded out the event with a mark of 9.80. Nebraska ended the first rotation with an event and team score of 49.10, ahead of OU’s 48.525.
NU continued on to bars, where Evenstad kicked it off tying for fourth with a season-high 9.775. Kathryn Howard hit a 9.725. Brittnee Habbib tied with Evenstad, receiving a score of 9.775 to start her day, and Stone tallied a 9.825 for second. Nathe added a 9.75. Heading into the third rotation, the Huskers hit an event score of 48.85 and a team score of 97.96, edging past Oklahoma’s 97.675.
The Huskers moved on to beam, with Woo stealing the show by capturing a career-high 9.95 and the event crown. Howard scored a 9.70. Habbib continued with a season-high 9.825. Fyffe added a 9.775 and Nathe posted a 9.75. NU marked an event score of 49.00, totaling a score of 146.95 narrowly passing the Sooner’s 146.675.
Nebraska capped the day on floor, where Davis hit a 9.75 and Nathe added a 9.725. Habbib received a 9.80. Evenstad put up a 9.85. Stone captured a strong season-high-tying 9.90 for second. Woo closed the event tying her career-high with a 9.925 and taking the event title. The Huskers posted an event score of 49.225. They closed the evening with a running score of 196.175 to escape the Sooner’s 196.00.
“We’re going to keep on track on what we’re doing,” Kendig said. “We have to get on board and work hard to get things to happen for us.”
Nebraska returns to action next Friday, Feb. 13, for a dual with No. 1 Utah for Pepsi Pack the House night at the Devaney Center. Competition is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. (CST).
