Salt Lake City, Utah - The Nebraska women's tennis team has two singles players and a doubles team left in the ITA Central Regional Tournament in Salt Lake, City, Utah. Freshman Madeleine Geibert and junior Wiveca Swarting advanced to the quarterfinals in singles play with a win in the round of 16 on Friday, while the doubles team of freshmen Mary Weatherholt and Jennifer Holmberg won their match on Friday in the round of 16 to advance to the quarterfinals. All quarterfinal matches will be played on Saturday.
After winning two matches to advance to the singles Main Draw and a then another match in the first round of the draw on Thursday, Weatherholt continued her winning ways on Friday morning, defeating Arkansas' Emily Carbone 6-3, 6-1 in the second round of the Main Draw. Weatherholt drew a tough match in the round of 16 in Aurelija Misviciute of Arkansas, the nation's top-ranked player. Weatherholt wasn't able to pull off the upset, losing 6-2, 6-3.
Swarting beat Iowa State's Erin Karonis 6-3, 6-3 in second round and then beat the fifth seed in the tournament, BYU's Kristina Doerr, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, in the round of 16. She'll play Misviciute in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Geibert beat Boise State's Klaudia Wlodarczyk 7-5, 6-4 in the second round of the Main Draw and then survived a three-set match against Arkansas' Nanar Airapetian, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, in the round of 16. Geibert will face off with Oklahoma's Ana-Maria Contstantinescu in Saturday's quarterfinal match.
Weatherholt and Holmberg beat Laura Baum and Bianca Jochimsen of Boise State in their doubles match, 8-4, advancing to the quarterfinals of the doubles draw. Swarting and doubles partner Maria Ring lost to another Boise State team, sixth-seeded Vivian Silfany and Pichittra Thongdach, 8-4, in the round of 16.
All four Huskers still left in the tournament will play their quarterfinal matches on Saturday morning.
