Huskers Finish Busy First Day at Gopher Invitational

Minneapolis, Minn. - The Nebraska women’s tennis team had a busy first day of the season on Friday at the Gopher Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn. The Huskers looked sharp in their first tournament of the fall, while four newcomers got valuable match experience.

 

Sophomore Kirby Bridges won two singles and one doubles match on the day, while freshman Mary Weatherholt cruised through the first two rounds of her draw in the Timberwolves Singles Flight. Freshman Madeleine Geibert had a 6-2, 6-2 victory in the first round of her draw before dropping a close 5-7, 6-0, (10-8) decision in the second round in the Vikings Singles Flight. And finally, freshman Jennifer Holmberg teamed up with senior Maria Ring to win a doubles match in the Golden Doubles Flight.

 

On the day, the Huskers went 12-6 in singles play and 4-1 in doubles play. 10 of the 11 Huskers on the roster saw action on the day, and all 10 will play again on Saturday. To view the entire bracket and full tournament results, visit gophersports.com.

 

Along with the Huskers, other teams competing in the tournament are Air Force, Eastern Michigan, Gustavus Adolphus, Iowa, Iowa State, Louisiana State, Minnesota, Northern Iowa and South Dakota State.
