Baylor Blanks Nebraska

Lincoln ? Baylor sophomore Kirsten Shortridge stole the show in game one of Sunday’s doubleheader, earning the shutout victory in the circle and finishing nearly perfect at the plate to lead Baylor to 7-0 victory over the Nebraska softball team at Bowlin Stadium.

 

Shortridge (5-5) allowed just one hit and only one walk, facing just three batters over the minimum. She also added four strikeouts while tossing her second shutout of the season. At the plate, Shortridge finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored, one RBI and three stolen bases.

 

Behind Shortridge's performance, Baylor improved to 21-13 overall and 4-6 in Big 12 play. Nebraska remained winless in the league, falling to 16-20 overall and 0-7 in conference action.

 

Junior right-hander Molly Hill suffered her fourth straight loss, falling to 7-10 on the season. In a complete-game effort, Hill surrendered seven runs (four earned) on eight hits, while walking four and striking out three.

 

Baylor took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Shortridge beat out an infield single and stole second to start the inning. She was still at second after a pair of pop outs, before Abby Hughes threw wildly to first on a grounder off the bat of Alex Colyer, allowing Shortridge to score from second.

 

A walk, two infield singles and two more singles up the middle led to a three-run third inning that put Baylor in front, 4-0. The Lady Bears threatened to add more, as Courtney Oberg tried to score from second on a single up the middle, but a perfect throw from Meghan Mullin in center nailed Oberg at the plate. Oberg ran over NU catcher Ashley Guile trying to score and Guile had to be removed from the game.

 

Nebraska's best scoring chance came in the fifth, when junior Haley Long hit a one-out double off the glove of a sprinting Tiffany Wesley down the left field line. Long moved up to third, but was stranded there as her hit proved to be Nebraska's only one of the game.

 

Baylor made it 7-0 in the seventh, with Nebraska's help. Three walks and two errors contributed to the inning, while Brette Reagan also ripped an RBI double for the lone hit of the three-run frame.
