Woo Leads Huskers at Stanford

Palo Alto, Calif. ? The No. 16 Nebraska women’s gymnastics team posted a 196.05 to take second in a triangular with No. 9 Stanford and No. 6 Alabama Saturday night at Maples Pavilion. The Huskers, who improved to 6-4 on the year, scored a 49.0 or better on vault, beam and floor and won three individual event titles.

Junior Tricia Woo was the story of the night for the Huskers, as the Milpitas, Calif., native competed as an all-arounder for the first time in her career and finished third with a 39.25. Woo also captured event titles on beam and floor with a pair of 9.90s, tying with 11-time All-American Tabitha Yim of Stanford.

“I am so proud of Tricia Woo and the job she did as an all-arounder the first time out of the gate,” Head Coach Dan Kendig said. “She really stepped up and showcased her skills today. She was clean on every event, and her confidence was incredible.”

Senior Emily Parsons also tied with Yim for the vault title, notching a 9.95.

Nebraska opened the meet on bars, where sophomore Maria Scaffidi led the way with a score of 9.85 for fourth honors. Senior Desire’ Sniatynski followed up with a 9.825 for sixth, and freshman Brittnee Habbib added a 9.725 mark. Parsons and sophomore Kathryn Howard tied with matching scores of 9.675, and junior Tricia Woo also made her career bars debut with a 9.60. NU earned a team total of 48.75 to Stanford’s first-rotation vault total of 49.225 and Alabama’s 49.00 on floor.

NU continued on to beam, where Woo set the pace with a 9.90 to take her first event title. Parsons and Habbib tied for fourth with a pair of 9.85s, followed by Scaffidi’s 9.775. Howard contributed a 9.70, and Nebraska wrapped up beam with a 49.075 and a running score of 97.825 behind the Cardinal’s 98.275 and UA’s 98.25 at the halfway point.

The Huskers moved on to floor, and Woo was again the team’s top performer with a 9.90 for first-place honors. Parsons added a fourth-place 9.85, while Davis scored a 9.80 to tie her season high. Scaffidi and Habbib tallied scores of 9.725, helping NU to a 49.00 and a running score of 146.825 to sit behind Stanford and Alabama heading into the final event.

Nebraska capped the evening on vault, where Parsons knocked out a 9.95 for top honors. Woo and Scaffidi added a pair of sixth-place 9.85s, and Davis earned a 9.80. Sniatynski earned a 9.775, and NU totaled an event score of 49.25 and a final team total of 196.05 for second, behind Stanford’s 196.775 and ahead of the Crimson Tide’s 195.775.

“We did an awesome job today,” Kendig said. “I couldn’t be more proud of this entire team. Our goal has been to go 196.00 on the road, and we did that today without our full team competing. I think the best word for tonight is ?effort.’ That was the biggest factor for us. We had an unbelievable effort from beginning to end, and we stayed strong as a team.”

Nebraska returns to action next Friday, March 14, for its final home meet of 2008 with a dual against IowaState. Competition is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at the DevaneyCenter, and Nebraska’s seniors will be honored with Senior Night festivities.
