Lincoln ? No. 15 Nebraska sent its seniors out in style with a 196.175-194.15 win over IowaState Friday night at the DevaneyCenter. In front of 2,072 fans, NU scored a 49.0 or better on all four events, and a pair of Huskers swept all five individual event titles.
Senior Emily Parsons stole the show by capturing four event wins, including a season-high 39.575 for the all-around title. Parsons also finished first on vault (9.95), beam (9.875) and floor (9.925).
In addition, sophomore Maria Scaffidi earned top honors on bars with a 9.875.
“Our seniors were incredible tonight,” Head Coach Dan Kendig said. “Emily and Desire’ (Sniatynski) finished one-two in the all-around, and Tricia (Woo) had another third-place finish this week, which is very impressive.
“Tonight was one of those nights that are fun, but in some ways, you don’t want to see it come. I was glad we could give our seniors a great final home meet and a strong win tonight.”
Nebraska opened the meet on vault, where Parsons notched an outstanding 9.95 for her first event title of the night. Freshman Erin Davistied for fourth with a score of 9.80, while senior Desire' Sniatynski took fourth (9.775). Sophomore Maria Scaffidi followed up with a 9.75, and Woo earned a 9.70. NU earned a rotation total of 49.00, ahead of the Cyclones’ bars total of 48.025.
The Huskers continued on to bars, and Scaffidi posted a career-high-tying 9.875 for first place. Parsons and Sniatynski tied for runner-up honors with a pair of 9.825s, and freshman Brittnee Habbib’s mark of 9.80 left her in fourth. Freshman Kathryn Howard contributed a fifth-place 9.75, giving Nebraska a bars score of 49.075 and a running score of 98.075 ahead of ISU’s 96.55.
NU moved on to the third rotation on beam, and Parsons took first with a score of 9.875. Woo placed second with a 9.85, and Sniatysnki and Howard tied for fourth with a pair of 9.80s. Habbib rounded out the lineup with a 9.775, helping the Huskers to a team total of 49.10 and a running score of 147.175 ahead of the Cyclones’ 145.20.
Nebraska capped the evening on floor, where Parsons grabbed the event crown with a 9.925. Woo followed up with a 9.85 for runner-up honors, and Sniatynski finished off the top-three sweep with a third-place 9.825. Habbib and Davis tallied a pair of 9.725 scores, and the Huskers combined for an event score of 49.05 and a final team total of 196.175 to edge IowaState, which totaled a 194.15 on the day.
“This was a good night for our team tonight,” Kendig said. “This is the kind of win we needed at this point in the year, and it will give us momentum going into our quad meet at PennState and the Big 12 Championships this week after. This team has a lot of fight in it, and we are definitely capable of achieving our goals in the postseason.”
Nebraska returns to action next Friday, March 21 with a quadrangular at PennState with Rutgers and Maryland. Competition is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. (CST) at Rec Hall in State College, Pa.
