Huskers Finish 6th at Big 12 Championships

Hutchinson, Kan.?Senior Brady Schnell snagged a third-place individual finish to lead the Nebraska men's golf team to a 6th-place finish at the Big 12 Championships at the par-70, 6,611-yard Prairie Dunes Golf Course in Hutchinson, Kan. Nebraska’s sixth-place finish matches last year’s finish, and also marks the team’s highest finish since a runner-up finish in the 1999 event.

 

The Huskers finished the first day with a total score of 616 (313-303), and fired a second-day final round of 293 to finish with a total score of 909, moving the team up four spots from their 10th-place, first day standing and marking the third-best score of the day, while also tying for the seventh-best team score of the tournament. The Huskers 20-stroke improvement from its first round (313) to final round (293) tied for the fourth best improvement from first to third round in Big 12 history.

 

Schnell finished with a total score of 215 (72-71-72), while the Omaha native’s third-place finish marked the first top-ten individual finish since 1999. Schnell additionally led the tournament in birdies with 14 while also placing first in the tournament in par-four scoring, finishing even. Schnell was on of ten individuals named to the Big 12 Tournament team.

 

Freshman Jamie Marshall was next for the Huskers, finishing with a total of 228 (76-81-71) to stand in a tie for 27th individually. Marshall also tied for four in the tournament in par-three scoring at just three-over par and additionally tied for seventh in the tournament in pars with 32. Marshall also tied for the second day’s sixth-best score with a 71, and moved up 21 spots in the standings on the second day.

 

Senior Ty Capps was just behind Marshall, finishing with a total of 231 (82-77-72), placing him in a tie for 38th individually. Capps also tied for first in the tournament with eagles, finishing with one, and moved up 13 spots on the second day of competition. Senior Ryan Lenahan was fourth for the Huskers, finishing with a 236 (83-75-78) and placing him in a tie for 48th individually.

 

Senior Drew Reynolds rounded out the squad with a 251 (88-80-83), leaving him in a tie for 58th place individually.

 

Oklahoma State won the tournament with a final score of 866 (290-289-287), claiming its fifth Big 12 and 50th overall conference men’s golf championship. OklahomaState leads the league with five crowns while Texas has captured three league championships, followed by Baylor, Kansas and Oklahoma with one title each.

 

The Huskers will enjoy a 23-day break before heading to the NCAA Central Regional in Sugar Grove, Ill. on May 17-19, where competition begins at 8 a.m.

  • Nebraska’s sixth place matched last year’s finish, its highest since a runner-up finish in the 1999 event.
  • Senior Brady Schnell’s third-place finish is the first top-ten individual finish since 1999, when Jamie Rogers finished in a tie for second place. Steve Friesen was tied for fourth and Josh Madden was tied for ninth in 1999 Big 12 Tournament, where the team also finished second.
  • This marks the first time Nebraska has finished in the upper half at the conference championships in back-to-back seasons since finishing third at the 1996 Big Eight Championships and sixth at the 1997 Big 12 Championships.
  • Nebraska’s 20-stroke improvement from its first round (313) to final round (293) tied for the fourth best improvement from first to third round in Big 12 history.
  • Nebraska’s second day score of 293 was the third-best score of the day while also tying for the seventh-best team score of the tournament.

  • Nebraska was the only team in the final round to have three golfers post scores of 72 or better.
  • The Big 12 All-Tournament Team includes senior Brady Schnell, who finished with a total score of 215. Tournament Notes

  • Oklahoma State claimed its fifth Big 12 and 50th overall conference men’s golf championship. Its 50 titles are in 61 league tournaments ? 9 Missouri Valley, 36 Big Eight and 5 Big 12.
  • Texas A&M’s runner-up finish is its best finish in the 11-year history of the Big 12 Championship. The Aggies have placed in the upper half of the men’s golf championship each of the three years and seven times total.
  • Texas Tech’s third-place was its highest ever. The Red Raiders improved by one place from tying for fourth last year.
  • With its fourth-place finish, Texas has finished either fourth or better in every Big 12 Men’s Golf Championship.
  • Oklahoma has finished in the upper half of the Big 12 Championship nine of 11 years with its fifth place in 2007.
  • There were six sub-par rounds for the 2007 Big 12 Championship, including four in the final round. Texas A&M’s Bronson Burgoon had the tournament low with a 67, which tied for the 11th lowest round in Big 12 history. Sub-par rounds: Bronson Burgoon, Texas A&M (67, third round), Pablo Martin, OklahomaState (68, third), Ryan Posey, OklahomaState (68, third), Walt Koelbel, Kansas (69, third), Oscar Floren, Texas Tech (69, third), Robert Gates, Texas A&M (69, first).
  • Pablo Martin’s 211 medalist score was the highest three-round total since 215 won the 2001 championship, also at Prairie Dunes.
  • Oklahoma State and Texas A&M each had two players finish in the top five. For OSU it marked the fifth time this has happened in Big 12 history. For A&M, it was its first.
  • OSU having four players in the top 20 marked the 10th time in the league championship this has occurred and the fourth time for OSU.
  • Oklahoma State led by five strokes heading into the final round. The Cowboys have taken a two-round lead in five Big 12 Championships and eventually won four of those titles ? 1997, 2000, 2005 and 2007. OSU tied eventual champion Texas for the two-round lead in 2004 and ended up third.
  • Texas A&M led after the first round for the third time in Big 12 history. The Aggies also led the 1998 event with a 306 and finished fifth and led after the first round in 2000 with a 284 and also placed fifth. A&M’s 284 at Prairie Dunes in 2000 is its all-time low round.
  • Texas A&M’s first round 285 was two strokes shy of the Big 12 first round record of 283 set by Oklahoma in 2002, also at Prairie Dunes.
  • Texas A&M Big 12 Championship rounds under 300 (including all three in 2007) ? 15 overall, 10 at Prairie Dunes.
  • Oklahoma State’s 290, 289 and 287 were its 10th, 11th and 12th consecutive scores below 300 at the Big 12 Championships and its eighth, ninth and 10th straight at Prairie Dunes (2004, 2002, 2001).
  • Oklahoma State Big 12 Championship rounds under 300 (including three this year) ? 29 overall, 22 at Prairie Dunes.
  • Texas Big 12 Championship rounds under 300 ? 25 overall, 19 at Prairie Dunes.
  • This is the eighth time the Big 12 Championship has been played at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan., and first time since the 2004 event. Prairie Dunes hosted the first six Big 12 Championships from 1997-2002 and the 2004 event.
